I`m new here, and looking at all the msgs everyone`s like looking for scores or talking about classical pieces off the top of their heads...
So what do you think of playing by ear ie hearing a song and being able to play it?
Personally i can`t sightread any sheet music unless its in c major...
but i can listen to a tune and then play it.

The hardest classical piece i`ve got through to the end was probably fur elise. Or maybe turkish march.
I wouldn`t even think of the concertos.
The good thing is I just heard Shania Twains Gonna Getcha good and I can play that...
And the mariah carey and vanessa carlton songs everyone seems to want here... well i played those without the score.
So depends. I think its kind of limiting for me though

Talk about coincidence...
well i played for the longest time and uptown girl a few weeks ago when they sang them on american idol...
how does it look like on paper... i played it with a 2 finger chord for the accompaniment to make it sound like people harmonizing.
my next project is getting through the horrible key change in Elton John`s i guess that`s why they call it the blues

i always thought that was a really hard song to play because it was in a minor key... but i figured out the left hand it`s a riff... i can show you how i did it in e flat...

I suggest you learn to read. It`ll be incredibly important, expecially if you wish to finish music school (and even if you`re not pursuing that goal it`d still be a good thing).
You won`t always be able to do stuff by ear... Especially if the song you choose is complicated.
Reading sheet music isn`t as hard as it looks. It doesn`t come naturally, though...
Practice makes perfect You`ll get used to it soon.

I dunno how to play by ear. But m a terrific sight reader, have conquered 19 page classical pieces with ease.
I guess its subjective, I would luv to be able to play by ear

hi olga,
that`s very true... esp if the song has some weird minor chord or major key change.
learning to read is very slow and luckily i`m just playing for leisure... but it still amazes me when i hear people handling big complicated looking chords. wow.
do you just remember the notes from where you read them or do you "read them each time you play...
