I recently bought `Improvising Blues Piano` by Martan Mann. It has quite a useful chapter on the boogie-woogie style, and a chapter on all the other main styles of blues. I quickly developed some nice boogie-woogie patterns, but be warned, getting anywhere near Jools Holland will take a lot (seriously) of practice!
Check out musicmann.com if you`re interested in the book.

Well Hercules, I’m a bit like you – bought a load of Boogie woogie and blues books etc. but have got no where. Until I found these books – IMPROVISING BLUES PIANO by Tim Richards – it comes with a CD and is very good. And there is BLUES HANON & JAZZ HANON by Leo Alfassy. These tell you the theory and give you progressive exercises so you can develop the skill and technique. But be careful as the progressive exercises really are progressive. You can’t do no. 1 and say “this is too bl**dy easy” and go to no.40 – you’ll die! Good luck, my friend!

Here are some Video’s you might like – (I LOVED THEM!). At www.homespun.com they’re by David Cohen BLUES PIANO – 1. Beginner, 2. Intermediate,
3. Advanced. But Hercules, they are in the process of converting the tapes to DVD. So wait until they’re converted. I’ve already bought them but am going to buy them when they’ve been converted. Meanwhile, Homespun.com have recommended LEARN TO PLAY GOSPEL PIANO by Ethel Caffie-Austin. You may be laughing but it is excellent. They show clips on their site of it, if you like blues and boogie you will enjoy this. Remember – HOMESPUN.COM and only buy the Blues piano until it has been converted to DVD (better quality) unless, however, you don’t have a dvd player. Good luck, you will enjoy this 2set DVD (but it is available on VHS also).

Saturn, F**cked up my friend. It isn`t Homespun.com it is HOMESPUNTAPES.COM - However, he/she is right about `Learn to play Gospel Piano` by EthelCaffie-Austin, it is great and the `Blues Piano` videos (beginner/intermediate/advanced) by David Cohen. It is Super! But like he said, wait untill they are converted - it is much better quality on DVD. It is strange though, the VHS tapes cost more on their site than the DVD`s it is the other way round here in the UK!

As mentioned before several times is Homepuntapes.com NOT HOMESPUN.COM. `It`s Easy To play Boogie-woogie` from the `It`s Easy to play` series - This is okay/average it is just full of tunes that sound like the recognizable boogie-woogie sound. However, it doesn`t show you riffs, techniques or anything like that. But it is good for beginners a good start.
Homespuntapes.com is excellent site for lessons.
My friend had a book of riffs. It was titled something like "the little book of riffs etc." But it wasn`t a little book it was huge! I`ll come back with the title of it soon.
Meanwhile go and buy the "Its easy to play boogie-woogie" book.

"Fast Forward: Boogie Woogie Piano" by Bill Worrall is a great Sheet Music book and CD to buy. From it you`ll be able to recreate the boogie sounds of such great pianists like Jools Holland and Jelly Roll Morton. Then develop authentic left-hand rhythmic patterns and sparkling riffs. You`ll not only be able to discover the secrets of syncopation, arpeggios, grace notes, and other essential boogie techniques; But also practice and accomplish them - as each track on the accompanying CD is recorded twice, first with the piano, then with backing tracks so you can play the piano part.
There is also "1001 Blues Licks by Toby Wine" this is great as you`ll be able to create your own boogie tunes by including and introducing these licks into them.
Also there is "How to play Boogie- woogie" by Frank Booth. With all this your Boogie - woogie playing shall become very impressive.
