Hi,
I started to teach myself when I was about 7 because there were no teachers. I am now 16 and have taught both younger children (5-6) and adults. There are special books for adults, but the others work just as well. You may go faster than you would if you started younger, because its easier for you to understand since you`re an adult. My advice: keep it up. If it gets hard and you get frustrated, take a break. If you know someone who plays, than ask them for help. Most importantly, don`t give up.....cause you`re gonna regret if you do.

It`s as simple as practice.. but don`t get ahead of yourself. You should have someone show you what to play and help you out even if it`s not a teacher. Before I took lessons I sight read easy music that was fun to play, and that definetly helped me a ton. Just an idea..
