Hi Gwen! he saddest piece I've ever played is one of the grade two pieces of 2007. If you live in the UK or Ireland this will be easy to get. It's very easy and made my four year old brother cry. Fur Elise by Beethoven played slowly is nice too and Colours of the Wind from Pocohontas is good. Hope this helps.

I love playing sad pieces. In fact I'm trying to find someone to compose a piece for piano and clarinet so I can play it in church with my piano teacher

With sad pieces, especially slower ones, you have more expression and grace in the movements of sound and its wholeness.

A song you may want to check out is..."I'm A Fool To Want You" by Frank Sinatra in 1951.
Probably written about Ava Gardner....
A great "sad tune" written in Em with nice b9 changes and excellent melody line.
It's available on-line.

Goldberg variations No.15. This canone is almost 4.5 minutes in length. Richly chromatic. Severely bleak.

Try Funeral March? Doesn't get much sadder than at a funeral, unless its the funeral of someone you don't like...

Yes! I'm not alone!

I feel for you, my piano teacher did the same thing. She was always suggesting those happy upbeating jumpy songs, yuck. I was just like, Um... let's just do some more Chopin. Lol.

The only happy song I like is Eternal Harvest because it's so freaking fun to play. Everything else has to be in a minor key though.

Hmm... you should try To Zanarkand (Piano Collections version), Together We Will Live Forever (The Fountain soundtrack), Pearl Harbor soundtrack, erm... actually. I'm just gonna host a zip of my favorite sad songs.
