Well I started teaching myself the piano (I now have lessons), and I can recommend Yamaha keyboards....they're great quality, have good extra features and aren't too expensive. I think mine was about £100 or something.
As for tips on teaching yourself, I'd recommend learning first the names of all the keys and there positions on both bass clef as well as treble.
Then I'd say to get yourself a theory book or some sort and just take a read of it - it really helps when it comes to reading music, if that's what you want to do too.
One other thing I'd suggest...if you want to be able to improvise, and make up your own songs, I say you learn some scales and arpeggios....I'm yet to discover the bonuses of them, but I know pianists who say it's really important to learn scales and arpeggios!!
Good luck, if you need any other adivce or anything, then give me a shout
Love Laura
