Hiya! I play the piano and sing and am also in secondary (high) school!
You asked about tips for teaching yourself to sing...there are a number of things you can do to improve your singing technique with or without a singing teacher.
Practise vocal warm-ups everyday (or at least before and after you sing). Some good warm ups include breathing exercises - stand with your legs shoulder width apart and make sure you are standing straight. Take a deep breath in and focus on breathing right down to your abdomen - try not to life your shoulders. Then hold this breath for four beats, and then steadily release the breath with a 'shhh' sound for 8 beats, then 12 beats, then 16. This will help your breathing and control.
You should start off by humming notes which are comfortable to sing. Then gradually work your way higher and then lower. Don't strain your voice though. It is important that you stop singing if your voice hurts at any time. Increasing and improving your vocal range comes with time, so you must not push it.
Then sing a few scales using different vowel sounds like 'eee' 'ooo' and 'ahhh'. When you sing higher, think lower (this sounds weird, but honest it helps you control the pitch of the note you're trying to sing). And vice-versa, when you sing low, think higher.
There are many more things you can do to help your singing, but as these idea's I have given you will take a little time to give effect and/or become sub-conscious actions, I'd recommend just working on those for a while before you go further.
Hope that was helpful!!! :D

ps - how long have you been playing the piano?

Hey, i'm new to this forum as well. i'm a girl and i also live in australia. but i'm not a beginner, with vocal or piano.
And i've got a few vocal tips for you ( i get group vocal lessons at my school):
Never be afraid to give everything you've got when singing. confidence is a key thing when singing.
On piano, if you want to get better, you have to improve technique. same goes for vocal. you have to sing scales and arpeggios and practise vowel sounds.
Keep a wide repetoire, of different styles, even try singing in another language if you can.
Try and sing with your diaphram because it produces a better and stronger sound quality. to do that (just in case you dont know) you tighten your stomach muscles and push them downwards so you feel grounded (like a treetrunk i was told once) and make sure you have lots of air. this method might hurt at first but i subconciuosly started doing it myself in primary school and now i have one of the best voices in my grade.
Hope this helps
