Hello. For those of u who may of had the honour of playing a steinway, was it a New York or a Hamburg? If you`ve played bot which one do u like better and why?

for the two I got to play on, I liked NY better. The Hamburg has a brighter sound, specially the upper registers. Perhaps it`s good for showy for concerts. The NY in general has deeper resonance and more variety of sounds to play with. It`s rather thick in the middle register. If both going on full force, the NY overwhelms the Hamburg, for some reason the sound of Hamburg decays faster.
I`m not sure that`s true for all the Hamburg and NY steinways.

Yes, that`s what I found too. I like the New York better.

I like the timbre of the Hamburg more, but the New York sounds more powerful.

though we had a hellish time dealing with the our NY...the sounds were so imbalanced that the middle/lower register drowns out everything above. It wasn`t fixed until the technician changed all the hammers.

My teachers is a Steinway from New York.
