i've been taking classic piano course for nearly 6 years and i stopped last year . this year i want to start again but i feel uncertain with classic . you know, classic for 6 years is a little bit boring . i want to try something new but not pop, jazz maybe ? but it means that i have to start from zero, i know nothing about jazz .

what do you think ? should i continue with my classic ? or just try jazz ? i like jazz enough, but i have very little knowledge about jazz piano .

*fyi, my last song in classic is schubert's impromptu op.90 no.2 and chopin's revolutionary .

If you feel uncomfortable about jazz, I don't think your best bet is jumping right into it. It can get very complicated. If you're bored of classical, I think a good transition from classical to jazz is ragtime. Maybe, try playing some Joplin. But, start off slow. A piano teacher is a good idea too. It's almost impossible to learn by yourself without any type of guidance. However, there are easy jazz pieces you can learn that may help you adapt to jazz. Take the 'A' Train and Summertime are two great pieces to start out with. Having a hard time at first is normal. I couldn't play anything when I started out. So good luck! I hope this helped!

I love trying to play both...

If you are bored with "classical", then there's obviously a selection problem. There is far too diverse a selection even within any of the "accepted" musical time periods: baroque, classical, roantic, and 20th century...I suppose by now it may not make so much sense to lump all of the 20th century into one category.

But my point is that you can go from some very esoteric material to some very straight foward material in the book of the same composer, let alone across the periods of music. There's a wide selection.

Let us know what composers/pieces you have been bored with, and maybe there could be suggestions of pieces that are more interesting.

Keep playing "straight" (classical) music as well as learning jazz. A good musician is not limited to one musical style, but is proficient in as many as possible. Oh, and while learning jazz you must listen to a lot of jazz. It takes a little while to get a good feel for it. Good luck.
