in music class i was working on a composition with the teacher and she said something aboout it being modal. it is in a strange key because there is an f# and c#, which should make it in D major. but i have it built around an E to B sort off framework, like E. i know this sounds odd, but it works.
anyway, i wanted to know what modal is, but she was busy etc. can anyone write the modal type scale on here?

What we know today as scales are 'tempered' scales. This is an agreed upon compromise so that we can have a piano and other instruments play concerts witout having to be retuned during the performance.

Prior to agreeing to a 'compromised' scale we had modes.
Ionian mode - W-W-H-W-W-W-H.
Dorian mode - W-H-W-W-W-H-W.
Phrygian mode - H-W-W-W-H-W-W.
Lydian mode - W-W-W-H-W-W-H.
Mixolydian mode - W-W-H-W-W-H-W.
Aeolian mode - W-H-W-W-H-W-W.
Locrian mode - H-W-W-H-W-W-W.

If you are working in the typical D key signature, but centering around E you are working with the Dorian type mode. If you have things centering around B you are working with an Aeolian type mode or natural minor scale. If you look at the scale structure patterns above you can see that each mode is like a major scale just starting on a different pitch, or scale degree of a major scale.

Figure out which scale or mode your using. And then use simple triads.I, IV, and V are very popular. Have learned anyhting about chord progression like VofV or anything like that?

yeah i think so. i'm not 100% understanding what you're on about, because you are from the usa? i'm irish, we say things differently here, for example "a tone/semitone" instead of a whole step/half step. there's also other stuff like that. but don't worry i think i got it.
