a piece with all-semiquavers treble at speed of 58, or a different arrangement of the same tune but in quavers at a speed of 116?

That's a deep question...and it doesn't have a "right" answer. From my writing, there have been times where it seemed more appropriate to write the rhythm out in a slower tempo using the 16th notes (semi-quaver in Brittish?), and others times where I've written out with a faster beat and use 8th notes...and I know that I've switched re-scoring a piece after a couple decades (thought I lost the original hand written page - after I found it I saw that I had chosen a couple years ago when using a computer to write out the piece that I had cut the tempo in half)

The geek in me likes seeing the more complex rhythmic notation using the slower tempo, but the performer in me (that struggles to be heard over the composer) appreciates the more simple notation using 8th notes...but then the trade of is counting 200 BPM versus 100...or 130 vs 65...

So I think as a composer I'd probably write the more challenging rhythm at the slower pace, but as a performer I'd rather have the faster tempo. Up to a point...the good thing about writing a lot is that I recognize the rhythms as the same, so I probably would not notice if I was playing with folks that actually read music. When playing piano by myself and reading there isn't much choice, is there?
