This post is really informative. I always wanted to learn the piano and it didn't appear in my mind to learn it online. I always taught of the traditional way. Thanks!

Learning piano online can be great or horrible, depending on your goals and the quality of the instruction you receive. If all you want to do is be able to plunk out some of your favorite tunes or play Christmas songs, it will probably work out fine. If you're wanting to learn proper technique and get a good solid foundation that you can go far with, learning from online sources may not be the best option. It's hard to replace the one-on-one interaction, with a teacher being able find problems and fix them early before they become bad habits, or explain something in 10 different ways until you understand what they're getting at. That being said, there is some great technology that is making online live lessons possible. I am a piano teacher, and I have been checking out Ashbury Music Hall (www.ashburymusichall.com) as a possible teaching platform for online lessons. As I'm just starting to look into this option, I haven't looked at very many sites like this yet, but I'm sure there are others that are good as well. For this type of lesson, both you and the teacher would need at minimum a webcam and a good (music quality) microphone, along with a Skype account. There is some awesome technology coming out involving MIDI keyboards, which is expensive now but may be something to think about down the road. As far as online videos go, they can be of some use, but don't expect them to take you too far. I've been attempting to teach myself the violin and ukulele, and these videos are great for showing you basic technique and how to play a few notes/chords, but I wouldn't expect to learn anything more than the very basics without taking live lessons from someone who knows what they're doing.
