I took piano lessons for a few years and I can read notes, and i know all the chords but I'm having difficulty playing by ear. I can pick out the melody (right hand) however my problem is putting it together with the left hand. Is there a science to it?

Any suggestions/advices/techniques are greatly appreciated!

Hello,
At Free Piano Lesson you'll learn to do much more than just play piano music from the written sheet music. You'll learn to add chords and all kinds of runs and fills and exciting piano playing techniques. You'll learn to turn your sheet music into a map, and create your own improvisations (and your own free piano sheet music) from that map. You can start by getting "Piano Chords & Piano Chord Progressions" and catalog of piano lesson courses "Exciting Secrets of Piano Playing!"

Thanks!!

Ive been playing in my church choir for a couple of years now and ive found that one of the best ways to find out what kind of chords to play along with the melody of a song is to listen for base notes. Most songs follow general chord progressions so if you have at least one chord down, its less of a challenge to figure out the rest. The webpage from the last reply can be a great help!
Happy playing

Also if you can find out what scale the melody is based on, you can probably find out what key its is in and what chord progressions to play with it. :)

I think you might need some tips on chord-melody arranging.Generally, each song mainly consists of several basic chords, and you've to find which the chords are. Then, you should choose the suitable chords among them to fit the melody you play.
A crucial point is we should learn from failure.

Look at Gary Rosato on YouTube. Either enter his name or LetsEnjoyPiano. What you will learn from this guy in ten minutes will amaze you. Let me know what you think. Personally, I was astounded and it has helped me so much! Good luck.

Hello,
There are a lot of good sites out there.
So, how do you choose and where do you start???
Well, here is my story:
I made helpful piano links pages to try and help people find helpful piano lessons online in order to help them with their piano playing. I was trying to learn to play the piano myself for years. It is very frustrating to try to learn the piano yourself and not feel you are making any progress. I was doing that until I found David Sprungers course. See http://www.helpfulpianolinks.com/home for my piano page dedication. That really helped me. I was also searching online for free piano lessons. The links on my piano pages are links that I have found to help you learn how to play the piano. Please visit my Helpful Piano Links pages to find piano links and start learning to play the piano.

Anyway, I highly recommend his course(no I do not get paid for this plug), I actually used it and continue
to use it. You can check it out and start with the original course. I also bought his full course.

Then I would try some easy songs,( songs you already know the melody and the words to)
that way you are one step ahead. Try all of his patterns on easy songs you know.

Also you should know the notes on the piano, chords, scales and the circle of keys to help you out.
check out this post: http://www.8notes.com/f/36_266053.asp

Hope this helps.

So I have only played by ear. Never had lessons and can not read music. It has been called a gift. When I get asked about the left hand I describe it as a brick wall in the brain that seperates the left hand from the right. The right side of the brain controls the left and the left side of the brain controls the right hand. This brick wall only comes down by practice. It only comes down brick by brick. No matter how bad it sounds during practice you must keep pressing on. I put some videos on youtube that feature some boogie woogie and blues style that I play. My youtube channel is www.youtube.com/bigclaytonpiano At the top is a few lessons. The left hand would be different for country. Watch the video "Last Date" that I have on there. This would be more of a country style. www.bigclayton.com is my website and would be happy to help out any way I can.
