Does anyone know anything about this elusive topic. I know that it was common for famous pianists of the early 20th century to start their concert with a short passage of music.

Now I`m not sure whether this was invented on the spot, or whether it was their signature piece which would be the same every time(they were usually only about 30 seconds long).

Hopefully someone could enlighten me on this topic.
