I was hoping somebody could give me some really good "mood" music. I`m thinking along the lines of Beethoven`s Moonlight Sonata, or Sonata Pathetique, but not anything by Beethoven. The skill level doesn`t matter. Just anything dark and depressing. Thank you!

Have a listen to Rachmaninoff`s preludes (op23, op32) of course there is also the very famous: C#m Prelude as well, which is very dark, creepy, and powerful.
Some Liszt may also be worth looking at, but I prefer Rachmaninoff!

Why do you want depressing music? In my oppinion music should make you feel happy and alive at all times.

I like all sorts of music, from dark and depressing to bright and happy. I like music because it expresses emotions which I can identify with- not just as a distraction. Dark music is good because when you are depressed it reassures you that you are not the only person who has ever felt this way. Happy music is good because it uplifts you and makes you feel that there is hope.
As humans we are capable of an incredibly wide range of emotions- music is an amazing tool to express this, rather than just as a distraction or a "pick-me-up" . (although it is good for those things )

how are Beethoven`s Moonlight Sonata, or Sonata Pathetique dark and depressing?? i love those! they aren`t depressing, and sure aren`t dark. they`re beautiful.
AND, come to think of it, music never depresses me. sometimes, it`s dark, but never depressing. it`s depressing if i can`t play the song too...but i know that`s not what you mean. here`s a dark song(not depressing though) Bach`s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. It`s dark, and kinda scary too. hehe, it`s awesome!!! anyways, bye!

Find any Prokofiev. He is like the king of dark and sarcastic music. Just listen to "Diabolic Suggestion" and you`ll know what I mean.

If you want music which is depressing there is something wrong with you, no music was written to create that feeling, of course someone could see it differently to the next person.
If you want something that is powerful and cataclystic, TRY to play Chopin`s final etude no.24 in C minor, takes lots of practice to get your fingers on the right keys though at the speed the piece intends. This piece if youre not careful will destroy you, which is far worse than making you feel depressed.

I`m pretty sure when the original poster said "depressed" he didn`t mean he actually wanted to get depressed. He meant he wanted some sad, despairing and/or dark music. Like the "Despair" piece by Prokofiev or the Prelude in E minor by Chopin. And these pieces have their merits too. Songs aren`t supposed to make you happy, they are simply meant to transfer whatever their emotion is to you. But I do agree with the Etude Op27 No12 (Ocean Etude). I love that thing with the huuuuuge rolling arpeggios. In fact, I love Chopin in general but that`s off subject

Try Chopins OP28 N°15 (prelude)
It`s rather melancolik....

Mark - There`s plenty of music that`s meant to have a subdued, depressing feeling. In fact, there`s an entire genre devoted to being suicidal and crying about how the singer`s heart is broken and all that...it`s called emo. And you can`t tell me that every composer/songwriter in history intended their music to give the listener an upbeat, cheerful feeling. Imagine classical music with no other interpretational guidelines but "Vivace"!

gnossienne no. 1 by Eric Satie or ballad for the unseen by e.s.t. (which is modern but great, from the album seven days of falling)
