I`m really a flute major, but I am required to be proficient at the piano (music majors have to take a piano proficiency test). Can anyone give my advice for beginning a piano. I know where all of the notes are and can play scales, I can also play very elementary songs on it once I figure out where I put my hands. Any advice to learning the piano would be very much appreciated!

There are finger exercises books that you can buy. I like Wieck Piano Studies.

Pick up a Faber & Faber "Technique & Artisty" book, Piano Adventures Level 1. Follow instructions page by page and if you are diligent in your practice, you will develop a passable technique at the piano. The book incorporate pieces of music to play while practicing your technique.

Well it depends a bit on what exactly you want to do. I mean are you just playing because you need to pass an exam? Or do you want to be a pianist as well?

If you just need to pass an exam, then just do what you need for the exam. You will probably find that piano sightreading is very different to flute sightreading! Also if you need to know scales, then learn them. It really depends on what you need. I would not necessarily agree with the other replies where exercises are reccomended. Piano is a relatively natural instrument to play in comparison to others, and if you are not interested in taking piano very far, then I think exercises are going to be a waste of time. Don`t get me wrong I practice execises every day as a matter of course, but don`t expect to learn piano by playing exercises. Most of what I have learn has come through playing pieces. And what is the point of piano anyway? To perform Hanon`s complete course of execises?

p.s
exercises have their place, but shouldn`t be used as an antidote to every problem encountered.

Thanks! Yeah, even though I`m worried about taking a profficiency exam, I would really enjoy being profficient at it; I`m majoring in music education and really need to know piano. Piano is also a great instrument- it can play both melodies and accomaniment, it has a very wide range, great instrument to compose for, key of C (lika flute ). Thankyou for all of your help! jay
