Dear Ellen, your question is interesting. If a student is advanced enough as to learn a concerto, why does she need help to choose one? You said nothing about your pianist level, but what`s your teacher opinion? He`s the best person to guide you, because he knows well your current capabilities and taste. Or are you learning without teacher?
Surely there are many different approaches to pick pieces off, but the mine one is hearing a lot of pieces in CDs and Internet, because I enjoy to hear piano music. So it`s very easy to know which pieces want one to learn to. The next step is to get the scores, and then to see which one it suits to one`s level.
There are also a 4 Volume Series by Könemann named "First Concert Pieces". It could be helpful.
Finally, the 2 Chopin`s concertos are gorgeus, and I believe suitable for solo piano, but demanding, and I`m not sure if they are good as first concerto pieces.
