i`ve been playing exclusively classical and romantic music ever since i started learning the piano, and i`d like to be introduced to jazz music, as i`ve heard quite a lot of good things about it in this forum. i`d say i`m an advanced player (played chopin waltzes when i was 12, and have recently played fantasie-impromptu, brahm`s rhapsody g minor). are there any particularly good composers or pieces thay you`d recommmend i start out with as an introduction to jazz music? it`d also be great if you could give me some links to free jazz sheet music as well, but i welcome any suggestions

Well, jazz is mostly about improvisation, unless you`re playing in a Big Band, or with a band that brings arrangements. So, there`s no specific pieces to learn, you better learn how to improvise, first. So, here`s a book that you have to get to learn jazz: THE JAZZ PIANO BOOK, by MARK LEVINE. Really, look for it, man, I`m not even a pianist and i`m learning pretty interesting stuff about improvisation modern and traditionnal concepts.

I agree. The Mark Levine book is fantastic. Get it. Read it. Study it, and practice what`s in it for 8 hours a day.
