There's a lot of piano under $5000, have a look at kawai and Yamaha.

Went shopping with a friend for pianos a few years ago. She ended up buying an upright I fairly disliked, coincidentally, for $5000, if I remember right. I don't recall the make--maybe an Essex. My impression is that it's difficult to get a really good new piano for that price, but maybe it depends on what you mean by "really good". The best uprights I ever played (and I've played lots) are Yamahas, and the best grands are Steinways (played lots of these two). Start by buying a copy of The Piano Book by Larry Fine.
