Hey, ive been playing piano for a short while (since christmas) and i have learned songs such as maple leaf rag and moonlight sonata 1st mvm quite easily. Do you you think i should get lessons or continue teaching myself? Any replies will be appreciated...

Learning Maple Leaf Rag and the first movement of the "Moonlight" Sonata on your own says that you have inherent talent within you and plenty of potential. A teacher will not only help you hone your skills, but also attain your full potential. In my opinion, nearly everyone needs a teacher...even the masters had teachers! Chopin, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and the Liszt (er..list) goes on. Yes, get lessons. You can only get better.

Firstly i need to say thanks for the compliment! My friend has been playing piano for like 10 years and he helped me with maple leaf, but he took "shortcuts" and learned easier chords meaning i had to learn them again... Anyway, i was looking at la campanella by liszt, (he he i know how difficult it is!) and the huge scales or whatever theyre called look really difficult to play. Would i need teaching for that or just practice? thanx again

by going for La Campanella I think you`re overshooting. Looking for something harder is one thing; but this is one of the hardest for an advanced student. You should get your skills assessed by a conservatory and be placed into an appropiate grade level.
Whenever I get students that have been self taught I always send them in for assessment. This is my method that I`ve done for just about every "lost" student.

Ok thanks i might do what you suggested, i kinda thought that la campanella would be to hard anyway... are there any pieces you can suggest similar in level to the two mentioned?

First thing`s first...when you find a teacher, he or she will assess your skills and musical knowledge, and develop a teaching program just for you. They will also give you suggestions for pieces to learn, and/or books outlining the basics of musical notation and theory (keys, scales, rhythm and such). But in the meantime, why not try the third movement of Beethoven`s "Moonlight" Sonata? That should keep you busy until you find a teacher.
