Hello, I am 14 yrs old and I want to play the best piano pieces of the composers. It dosent have to be hard as long as it is really beautiful. For me, these are the best pieces of the composers:
Bach: I dont play his pieces.
Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata(1st Movement), Pathetique Sonata
Chopin: Fantasy Impromptu, Nocturne op.9 no.2 and Harp Etude
Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody no.2&6, Liebestraum no.3.
Mozart: Sonata Facile(1st and 2nd Movement), Alla Turka
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto no.2
Schubert:Impromptu op.90 nos.3 & 4 and op.142 no.2
If you people think there are better pieces than these, just tell me because I will be happy to play them. Also please tell me which piece is the best of Bach because I dont know which among his compositions is the best.

I think the best piece for you is Beethoven`s Sonata no.29(Hammerklavier). An easy one for a very advanced pianist!

I would say:
Liszt: Hungarian rhapsodys no5,no14, la campanella, dance of the gnomes (its not really romantic but very nice).
Debussy: Clare de lune
Rachmaninoff: Probably everything.
I think you should especially listen to the 2 mentioned hungarian rhapsodys...

Beethoven- (All the named sonatas), Rondo a Capriccioso, Fur Elise (I think it sounds pretty good, not spectacular though. But he must have done a good job to have it so famous.)
*Favorite Composer*Chopin- Heroic Polonaise, Ballad in G minor, Raindrop Prelude, Fantaisie Impromptu, Revolutionary, Tristesse and Ocean Etudes.
Liszt- La Campanella (Haven`t heard a lot of liszt, though everybody says Hungarian Rhapsody No14 is good)
Schubert- Impromptu No3, March Militaire
Prokofiev- Suggestion Diabolique, Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite (Especially Montagues and Capulets), Concertos 2,3, and 4.
Mussourgsky- A Night on Bald Mountain, Pictures at an Exhibition
Saint-Saens- Danse Macabre
Schumann-Aufschwung, Traumerei
Scriabin- Prelude Op16 No3, Etudes Op2 No1, and Etude Op8 No2
Tchaikovksy- (Haven`t heard much of him either) Concerto No1, Nutcracker Ballet.
Rachmoninoff- 3rd Concerto (I haven`t heard much Rach either, I only heard the concerto through "Shine") Prelude in G and G# minor
I think that`s it.

I must say that it`s nice to see someone who isn`t saying "I`m so good, everything is SOOOOOOO easy, give me some hard music etc etc"
I heard Faure`s Nocturne No4 the other week, that was quite beautiful. I`m thinking of playing it myself.

See if you just practice for ages on a piece, you will get it. I started off with fur elise and moonlight then took a bit of a jump to joplins maple leaf rag. It took about 3 months or so to learn, but once you learn some of it, you become encouraged and find yourself learning the rest. People say you should play stuff at your current level, but i really like the harder pieces and try to learn them. Currently working on la campanella, and am about learn the part that involves playing the same note twice (i dont know about measures and stuff!) which is looking difficult.

I think what you should do is buy a few best of chopin, liszt etc cds and youll find the most famous pieces there. Or you could get the track listings and download them...

I agree with the Rachmaninoff`s 2nd Concerto. The 2nd and 3rd movements I`m not so sure about (they require a second hearing) but the first movement is haunting in its mournfulness. Everyone ought to give it a second hearing.
Also, mase, you should stop working on La Campanella. I am above your level, and I was working on it. I learned about 1/3-1/4 of it, and then I started going to Peabody. They found many things wrong with my technique and I discovered that what makes a lot of La Campanella hard is that it is not that it is insanely difficult to play, but to play it WELL requires immense skill. So you should have a bit of fun with it while you can, but in the long run you won`t be playing it for a while. But lets say you did work on it and finish it, when you actually arrive at a skill level where you should be working on it, you will have already put all of your bad habits in there. I don`t know you, and I`m making assumptions, but I think it is a safe assumption that with your current repertoire, you shouldn`t be tackling La Campanella just yet.
