I dont know about everyone else, but i think that there is less imagination these days. Most pianists are more interested in playing other pieces rather than creating their own. Of course, this is necessary when starting out, but more advanced pianists should be looking to write their own pieces like i will if i reach a high enough level....
I didnt mean this to sound too negative but i think its true...

I once thought about composition, and even tried it a little. However, I cam to the conclusion that nothing I write will ever come close to what the masters have written. Every attempt I could possibly make would be completely blown out of the water by any piece that Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, etc. wrote. So I find it pointless to spend so much time and energy on something that will inevitably be hugely inferior to previous compositions. That`s just my take on it.

Imagination? Well, that comes naturally. Being able to compose a (good) piece? That either takes a sh*t load of practice or Motzert genes.

composing aint hard...you just need to b influenced by a few composers or pieces. I dont mean you have to bite off their works, but do not forget.....all the greats were influenced from the greats before them.
