I`m 14 years old and i hust started to play 3 months ago. i was wondering that, since i`m teaching myself and i have never played any other instrument if i am driving myself into a corner by not getting a teacher. Also, i do not have an actual Piano i just have an electrical organ that has only 30 to 40 keys so i was wondering what songs could you recommend some songs that only take the middle of the keys? Lastly, I have been trying to learn a song about 6 pages long, "American Pie" by Don Mclean out of this book and I want to ask how long, in hours, it usually would take to learn a song this length?

If you are smart and determined you are likely to succeed at teaching yourself, but American Pie after three months? Usually, I take a song, and learn it over the course of maybe a week, but in between I eat, sleep, and do schoolwork. I don`t usually sit down and learn a piece hour on hour. On rare occasion, yes. Good luck, either way.

Learn a song quicker?

...

Well, if you have decent technical skills I`d recommend to practice sight reading. How? Get A LOT of easy sheet music and read through them all. If your problems are technical...well good luck. Best technical solution is to work with musical pieces and pick up technique. IMO, playing Czereny and Hanon for hours is just a waste of time(but the scales and arpegios are exceptions). By the way...it took me about 4 years before I could learn a piece at a decent pace (decent pace = Hungarian Rhapsody 13 in 2 weeks). My piano teacher can learn and nail pieces in 40 minutes (Hungarian Rhapsody 13 comes to mind). Note that my teacher has played piano for about 40 years.

All I`m saying is: TIME AND PRACTICE WILL HELP YOU LEARN A SONG QUICKER.
