Help me out?

I`m sixteen, and I`ve taken lessons for about eight years. My boyfriend`s taken lessons for about the same amount of time, but he`s a lot more classically trained than I am. My lessons have always consisted of half an hour of learning random songs; he knows a lot of terminology from years of theory that I never had. The thing is, he doesn`t know how sloppy my music education is, so I don`t really feel comfortable asking him for clarification. Most of the time, I can figure out what he`s talking about, but sometimes he just loses me.

The other day, he and his piano teacher were talking about "brightness" of pianos. What does that mean? What makes a piano bright? (Or dim, or whatever the opposite is...?) I hate to sound ignorant, but I don`t really want to have to ask him...

Thanks in advance

yeah if a piano is bright it means it has a brilliant quality to it... the sound will project and have a piercing quality

if it had a dim sound-the opposite, then it`d sound dull and unclear

hope that helps

Brightness comes from hard hammers, injected with lots of lacquer. Soft hammers are jabbed with needles.
Too-bright pianos may sound harsh, jagged. Too-dark pianos sound dull, muted, blurry.
