Elgar and Beethoven are quite good, but my favourite composer is ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, even if he isn`t a classical composer. He is the brother of the cellist JULIAN LLOYD WEBBER don`t ya know.

What!? You haven`t heard of Andrew Lloyd Webber?! You know, he composed that cool musival, `Cats`, and also Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Super Star, Phantom of the Oparah (that may be spelt wrong) Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Aspects of Love, The Beautiful Game, sunsetboulevard, and loads more, inclueding a rather cool piece for the cello based on Paganini`s caprice 24 ( I love that so much.)

BERLIOZ! Requiem, especially the tuba mirum, everyone should own a recording of this, chills, I guaruntee it. For fun, research the history of the piece, and find out about how it was given it`s debut.

It has to be Rachmaninoff`s 2nd piano concerto. It has some of the best piano emotions in it and as a pianist trying to learn it i find it gets better when you "look" into the music.

My favourite piece is Poemé by Zdenko Fibich, it`s not a hard piece to play and it`s not very
long. But it`s a beautiful piece.

Not sure if this topic was about playing or listening, anyway for listening I think nobody so far has mentioned Mahler. His symphonies are unbelievable, although I didn`t think so until I was older. These pieces are gigantic, between 60-100 minutes. No`s 7 & 8 are probably the least approachable but the rest.........!!
Best musical experience - seeing the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin playing No. 9 under Abbado.
Shostakovich Symphonies 5, 10, 11, 12 are also fantastic if you like your music with plenty of action. Elgar Symphonies 1 & 2.
I could go on......

For playing....this changes all the time. At the moment:
Beethoven Sonata 20
Mozart Sonata in A (ends with Rondo Alla Turk).
Mendelsshon War March of the Priests (adapted for piano but you guys with digital can play in the original church organ version).
Bach Toccata in D minor (also originally for organ). Must learn the fugue some time!!
Elgar Chanson de Matin
Various Gershwin tunes.
Songs from shows are always great fun. Maybe Next Time (Cabaret), If I Loved You (Carousel), Les Miserables songs.
I could go on....and on....and on.

Rachmaninov, a lesser known piece. Barcarolle, Opus 10 No.3, plus the piano concerto number 2.
there are some obscure pieces out there that are absolutely beautiful. A guy named
Zhavronok wrote a piece called The Lark that was arranged for piano, and there`s a piece by Liszt
called Die Zelle In Nonnenwerth (there are 8 different variations, number 4 is my favorite), that was
arranged for piano and played by Leif ove Andsnes, if you want a major artist recording.

Other than that, pretty much every French impressionist comopser+chopin. Good stuff.

My favourite piano piece is "Pavane pour une infante defunte" (sometimes known as Pavane for a Dead Princess) by Ravel. It is beautiful and sad. You must go and listen to it! I also love Rachmaninov`s 2nd piano concerto.

I forgot Mendelsohn!!
I like everything of his except the incidental music to "A Midsummer Night`s Dream"; that annoys the hell out of me.
