My piano teacher, who is a concert pianist and an experienced teacher once said that there are many people who don`t have a good grounding in the basics of piano playing and yet they are attempting to play pieces such as this; and yes, they may be able to play it, but that`s the only thing they can play, and often they don`t play it correctly. Moreover it is detrimental for your development in the right piano technique to be trying to play such an advanced piece. Having a grade 5 cert in a year is no big deal, it doesn`t say anything about your foundation. what is more important is getting a strong and solid foundation in your basic techniques before attempting any music that is beyond your level. Learn to walk properly before you fly.

What do you mean by a good foundation. I can play alot of other pieces of a similar level also. Maybe i can`t learn them as fast as some other people but thats probably only because i have been playing for a year and a bit.

I`m actually the worst on this forum. Haha. I can`t play ANYTHING. I slowly started teaching myself today, starting on Fur Elise. I can get through a little of it, but not the whole thing.
I also already knew how to read Treble Clef notes, so that helped alot. Still need to memorize Bass, though.

There is a lot to say about a good foundation. But if you tell me that you are playing pieces of this level after learning for only one and a half year, then it is quite likely that you may have acquired some bad habits or wrong finger posture just to play these pieces. But one day, you will find that you can`t go any furthur, because you do not have the basic foundation. Playing the piano well calls for great technical and musical demands. It is not so easy. One and a half year is not enough to reach such a standard even if you are a child prodigy. It takes at least 5 years to a lifetime. I would advise you to get a proper and qualified piano teacher to start you from the basics and to correct any mistakes in the way you play. Play more etudes to develop your finger dexterity and strength especially your 4th and 5th fingers.

stop trying to show off. I`ve learnt the piano for six months and i can play grade 4, but onli that 2 pieces. I can play many other pieces as well, the easy ones you mean. The way u word your forum, you`re obviously trying to appear humble while trying to impress others. You`re seriously lame. And what of musicality? and tonality? piano isn`t simply about pressing the keys. The greatest piano masters have talked about miles of scaling and arppegios before perfecting even the simplest of legatos. So you think you`re a prodigy? or maybe you believe you transcend the likes of rubeinstein and beethoven? Or you haven`t heard a real pianist play? Anyone can pull off even a grade 7-8 piece with practice, but its how good he`s perfected it, and his ability to play other similar pieces as well. Music is also about feeling its soul, and understanding other things such as why beethoven`s pieces tend to incline toward sharper syncopations. If you can do all the above moderately, then you`ve achieved grade 5. otherwise, quit ur bull. I`m disgusted with immature forums like this.

Whew... I planned on saying something after reading thru this, but hey- I think this last person said just about everything I was gonna. I`m right with ya! You know[[[ that`s like saying " I am sooooo fat" just so people will tell you that you`re not. And then after they assure you that you are skinny, you feel better about yourself! So- maybe that`s what you`re trying??? I`m not trying to be mean, but you don`t have to try and sound like you`re really bad when you *know* that you`re good. Well- nuf said! ha ha ha

he`s only 12, of course he`s still immature. Do learn to be more humble, kid.

Dear Mr. Fantasie Impromptu pianist. Different pianists have different techniques. Personally, I jumped into the real repertoire when after one year of study, and now, six years later I havent missed a single "foundation" as you call it. This pianist who started this forum may not need "hannon" or "czerny" to develop his craft. He says he plays a "little" of a scriabin scherzo, therefore I assume in 10 months his reading is not up to par with his music. I do agree that sight reading would be a foundation to miss, but I have met many pianists who are incredibly gifted and can fly with no need to walk.
