As I have browsed this thread, I notice that there are a lot of beginners here,
claiming to be amazing pianists. Let me explain to you how mediocre you really
are...

I started playing when I was 2. I learned the Hungarian Rhapsodie # 2 when I was
4, and Rach 2 when I was 7, by practicing 8 hours a day. In 2 years I learned
Rach 3, and all of the Prokoffief Concertos. Of course, they aren`t that hard, they
just take a lot of finger strength. Now I am 10 and I can play every concerto ever
written, all of the Beethoven and Prokoffief sonatas, the 2nd Rachmaninoff
Sonata, all of his preludes, and the Liszt Sonata in B Minor blindfolded! I am
now going to be performing with the Berliner Philharmonic, and am composing
my own concerto, which is harder than Rach 3 and all of the Prokoffief concertos
combined! I would like to see you play that!

(I have also learned to play Beethoven`s Hammerklavier Sonata Opus 106
(the hardest one) with my toes, while making a cup of tea!)

Hmmm... lets see. I am learning as much of Rachmaninov`s 3rd Concerto as I possibly can, but am mostly focusing on Rachmaninov`s Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Schumann concerto in A Minor and Tchaicovsky`s Concerto 1. I can play the Grieg Concerto and Rhapsody in Blue. I am 15.

When I was born, I sight-read the Hammerklavier Sonata, Rach 3, and Balakirev`s Islamey Fantasy at the same time as composing a concerto, a symphony and writing a dissertation on the nature of reality. By my first birthday, I could play anything on any instrument. I got bored, so I decided to compose my own music. I wrote 99999999999999999999 sonatas, 3287901501372905732708579123457 concertos and 1000000000000000000000000004 symphonies all while playing every single Chopin and Liszt etude at once, as well as studying nuclear physics, brain surgery and rocket science. I had to do this while suffering from terrible nappy rash.
Now I`m 2 years old, and thinking of retiring from music because it`s so easy and I`m getting bored.

To Rachel and Prodigy, your posts are two of the funniest that I have ever read. XD

I only read the first page and this last page. I do believe, though, that this topic was originally about the age of piano players *NOW*, and not what skill level you are at/what age you were when you started playing.

i`m14 and have been playing for 8monthes- i start lessons in 2 wks, but in 3 monthes the coveted school jazz band had me save them when there piano player moved, and fro the talent show a month later, i did Piano Man (b. Joel), and Proud Mary (T. Turner). age really doesn`t matter. If you love something, you shouldn`t be discouraged by someone who`s parents made them start lessons while they were still in the womb!
