I`ve been drummin for a long time and in all my experience for some reason my band teachers have this thing against drummers. I`ve never understood.
Neway today i asked my teacher why do you hate drummers? and she couldn`t even give me an awnser i probably sure some of you drummers experience it too. I`m a Junior Mallet and percussion player and i`ve kinda been playin since i was 7.
So whats up with everyone here dis is my first time here in all.
I would like to get to talk to some of yall drummers just to hang out n stuff.

Same here man.
My band director is against male drummers.
Not to sound sexist cuz im not, but all the male drummers are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the girl drummers.
My bd prabably thinks dat we`re just monkeys with sticks, while the girls are some kind civilized musicians.
Trust me, none of the girl drummers [in my school] can play ANYTHING good.
And when I mean ANYTHING, i mean ANYTHING.
They can`t even play straight 8th notes!
None of the president or secretary or anything of that matter in the last 14 years he`s been teaching had NO male drummers in it.

Dude, you need an attitude change, and for a girl to blow you away with her chops. This whole idea of male drummers being better than females is udderly absurd! It is a belief that has been infecting drumlines for too long. I am working with a drumline for the summer, and the freshman girls blow the freshman boys way out of the water! I think one of the reasons that sometimes the ladys may not be as good as the guys is because of this distorted male dominance complex. They don`t feel they can be good, because they are always told that they can`t be! Stand up lady`s! Its time for you to show us guys how good you really are!

Well i am a female and i have to disagree maybe your drumline is like that but in mine females are just as equal as males some even better it just depends on attitude
That male better than female is a STEREOTYPE
Thats a opinion from my veiw

I know that your teacher may be doing this but maybe they`ve never really delt with percussion that much. My band teacher is a major in Trumpet but he loves our drum line. He knows that some of us are even better than him but he knows that he can teach us a lot more

i have the same thing with my bd. today for example we were practicing some patriotic shizzznits for some memorial day thing and i threw in some accented double speed triplets that i thought fit and were not out of line in terms of timing dynamics anything and he flipped out. maybe a band tyeacher will see this thread and reveal the mystery

Our band teacher is the same way. But yet again he`s been at our school since 1969 and he thinks that the percussion should do the same stuff as the band does. But we have to have some practice to ourselves too. I`m really in the middle of things...

Unfortunately, drum lines are required to be walking drum computers: you are required to play the exact same rhythm, same dynamics, etc, every single time you play. This allows uniformity of the line, and precision drumming, but does not allow for any individuality. If one person is to start drumming something that may be in time, it sounds out of place, because the rest of the line is playing the same thing they always have. If every member of the line were to do this at the same time, you`d have chaos. However, some bands allow their percussionists to write the drum cadence for the line. My high school did not, but some do. I had bad experiences with my band teacher as well, as she did not like the drum line, but it is just one aspect of music and hopefully your school will have more musical programs, like a jazz band, where you have the opportunity to improvise.

LoL, my band teacher and orchestra (not symphonic) teacher both spend half of the time working with the percussion sect. XD
And at my school, female percussionists are better than male ones. *shrugs* I guess it depends on the student environment. I mean, if you discourage a female student from playing well (with all those rumors on how guys are better than gals), than she won`t play as well.

I think it`s because drummers tend to have an attitude. I mean, we fidgit and make noise. It`s our job to hit things with sticks, how well behaved can we be, right?

It really shouldn`t boil down to how the director treats yoiu being unfair. You should look at the behavior of your section and compare it to the behavior of other sections. Also, most of the time the drum line needs to be the most disciplined swcion in the band, because they hold the tempo and rythm and usually recieve the most atention.

I totally agree. I don`t know about you guys, but our drumline screws off all the time. We`re always getting yelled at.
