How would I go about hammering a gong? I was surprised to find out that the gong I sometimes use in my amateur orchestra was home made. Although it is the right shape and made from the right materials, it was never hammered. What is the best way to hammer it to make it sound more like a gong?

The best way to hit a gong to to sad on the right side of it and out your left hand on the other side. Don`t touch your hand on it the gong put it about 5 inches away and use a base drum mallet to hit it. You have to hit it hard or else it will sound really bad.

um, guys... having been a percussionist for over six years, I am well aware how to PLAY a gong. What I intended in my question was to find out how to HAMMER one. This involves knocking dints in it to change the way it sounds sound.

Heh. I played the gong in concert band and ours is pretty banged up but it sound pretty good. We use a gong mallet thats really big and heavy to hit ours.
