i started playing snare 2 years ago and i am really good, probably the best in my high school and we are really good. but the other day one of the less talented drumers, instructed me that i had the sticks in the wrong hand. i didnt want to look stupid because i am so great to have someone beneith me telling me what to do so i said i was doing it on purpose. but now i am wondering how do you tell which stick to put in each had? they arnt labled, or at least the high quality one i get arnt they are so expencive so they have to be really good (i got two vic firth`s for $80, what a deal!) can anyone help my figure out how to know which stick goes in which hand? if you can i would really like help as soon as possible.

notice how they say "weight paried"

that means they are as close to the same weight as possible probably down to the 100th of a gram

It doesn`t really matter for me. I have stick grips on my sticks and my drumline instructor says that it`s good to have them on there because it balances the weight of my sticks. If you can tell the difference between your sticks then make them be for a certain hand. If not don`t worry about it..

Dear confused drummer, (no pun intended),

The heavier stick goes in whichever hand is closer to the north: You see, the north pole has terra ferma, but the south pole doesn`t. Actually, it MAY be the other way around. The point being, you need to keep balanced with that.

It`s trixie cause if your marching you may have to switch hands mid show when you change directions from side to side to the other side. But if it`s a good stadium it shouldn`t be as much of a problem because it`ll be designed so you don`t have to turn your back on whichever compass direction is relevant.

(lmao...)

Oh man, it all ties into how everything in the world is to the advantage of righties, and we poor left-handers are discriminated against mercilessly...

Fight the power, (!!!)

Jonny,

Dude, where did you get that information from? Man, if the heavier stick had to be in your arm closest to the north pole, then you`d be switching the sticks to the other hand every time you turned 180 degrees. Especially in marching band, when you`re moving around constantly.

And I didn`t even know that there was a set hand you were supposed to put each stick in. Well, that`s probably because I`m not a drummer.

Well, with that attitude you never will be!

lol, just kidding. In fact, my entire post was a... joke.

Cheers,
Jonny

PS: I`m not much of a drummer either, so don`t feel to bad.

It doesn`t matter which stick goes in which hand. If you are playing traditional you want your left and holding traditional and your right hand match grip. That`s all I can tell other than try to humble yourself, keep an open mind and take lessons from people that don`t have as much chops as you claim, and don`t fake the funk of `I was doing that on purpose` you`re only short changing yourself by not making every technique polished. Someone very wise told me to be the fruit that never is ripened because once you think you`re ripe you start going rotten. Keep practicing.

WOW! Hey dude--you say that you`re really good and stuff and that you play for your high school. Don`t you think that if it really mattered which stick was in what hand your instructor would have told you? Lmao.

Oh, and some Major Life Advice: Don`t talk crap to a guy you`ve never seen before--even though you might be the high school bad-ass, he might be the college bad-ass. (Or whatever--you get my point.)

It never matters for me. LMAO, it doesn`t matter whether I`m facing north or south; I`m pretty consistent, and I adjust quickly.

Whoever criticized you for that is pretty stupid (no offense). I mean, if they WANT you to have this stick in this hand and that stick in that hand, than they would`ve labeled them "L" and "R", just like earphone stuff.

It doesn`t matter unless you have a preference. Leave it at that.
