It`s my first year in percussion and I came in knowing pratically nothing but there`s a good exercise that gets us percussionists warmed up.
It goes like this.
4/4 R R R R R R R R L L L L L L L L R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R L L L L L L L R R R R R R R R L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L
Pratically it on 4 count with 8 beats on the right, 8 beats on the left, 16 beats on the right, 8 beats on the left, 8 beats on the right, and 16 beats on the left and then a release.

Hey guys... i wanted soo much to learn all of those stikings and stuff when i was about 12. But one thing i regret is that i just gave up. But one day i saw a Civil War reenacting group that i watched and i wad looking for a drummer because u know there part of the Civil War. well i joined the group and was a private for a while, then i saw a drummer that needed help. I had remembered some of the rudiments that i learned and showed him, then i was hooked. I started playing songs such as DOWNFALL OF PARIS, GOVENERS ISLAND, and THE GIRL I LEFT BEHIND. I just started experimenting with some stuff and made my own. To make a long story short i tried out my jr. year of high school and now im the drum captain at 17. So never give up and try to make some of ur own, trust me the best teacher can sometimes be urself.

hey man im watching drumline right now and all you have to do is practice im 14 years old. I have dreamed of being on the drumline at my school, so half way through my 8th grade year i started taking private lessons. first of all i play the saxaphone and i hate it. but after 4 months of hard work i made next years high school drum line playing 5th bass. then after that i will be playing snare for the rest of high school. work hard and you can do it.

hey, i`m a future 7th grader and jazz member. I`m what most people would call me a leader in the band (because so good). My gir friends in the band and I have wrote 2 duets for snare & trombone,4 solo snare pieses, and a trombone solo. my first instrument was the trombone and now i`m a percussianist it was a great instrument,the trombone, and i would recomend it to anybody.

If any of you are looking for new cymbals, make them Istanbuls. They are the best cymbals that I have encountered in my life. If you go to the site istanbulcymbals.com, they will give the descriptions of the cymbals. There is one that has the same sound wherever you hit it. That is until you hit the bell. I would know because I have seen it and heard it. It is awesome. And it`s got this unique sound. I have an Istanbul Profesional Med. 17" crash and OH MY GOD!! This cymbal is accualy and Alchemy but Istanbul makes them. This cymbal has a VERY long ring to it and it has A LOT of sustain.(constant sound) So don`t go to your local music shop, they won`t sell it. Every music shop that I`ve been to doesn`t sell them. You have to buy them off the net or eBay.

Oh, I forgot to mention, every Istanbul cymbal is hand hammered. There is no sheet metal pressing. Just hand hammered and awesome cymbals. And all the non-traditional cymbals are the names of the workers.

if you realyy want to know how to get good then u need to look up these three schools the dillard high school marching panthers(for the percussion section look for ddd)the sudden impact percussio section of bethune cookman college. or the z 28pecussion section of floridia a&m university. they have the best of the best drumlines and bands. you have to be a very good lisener to be able to learn any of the candences.such as(cut throuth,sudden impact.over night, duck mputh,black thunder,and stick control) good luck

wow ya`ll need to see DCI people. Check out any of the santa clara vangurad dvd`x, blue devils and of course cavaliers. If you watch those dvd`s and play along you will get really good and leanr things like electric wheelchair, ditty, spanks, double beat and many many more. But ya any way check those out cause when you get into college you will need those skills and chops. peace

wow i play both and i gurantee for all you people who think you are a drummer out there you havent even begun to explore drumming until you look at least alittle into the marching/core arena. It is 100 times harder than set because set is all based off of grooves such as a straight 4/4 beat where snr is on beat 2 and 4 and bass is on 1 and 3. If you look at dci music what you see is mostly ink rather than paper and an extremly difficult sheet of music to play. You see what DCI has taught me is that even somthing as simple and Stick Control (a very cool cadence look it up and play in a 180 bpm with a metronome if you think you are a drummer)can be used as a tool to strengthen every aspect of playing.
Any way I would like to continue to discuss the issue with any one, but despite the fact that I love my drum set, marching snare is definantly way more challenging because there is a set expectation that has to lock in with as many as 10 or 11 snare drummers vs one guy beating on crap.

I know a song that starts out at 180bpm(beats per minite if you were wondering). The song is The Crunge by Led Zepplin. One of my favorites. I hope I can copy the sheet music if anyone is interested. I got a whole book of best drum sheet music by Led Zepplin!
