You want some decent beats? Here you go.    16:20 on Sunday, November 20, 2005

All that stuff shown in the movie drumline is honestly a bunch of easy crap. A good exercise is the 60 second one by BD. I love playing it. It`s pretty fun to play with fellow snare drummers AND it`s good for chop building.

Ditty!

Or, you could spend the $20 or so and get a legal copy of the ENTIRE book and support the folks who wrote it at http://www.bluedevils.org/merchandise/product_info.php?products_id=108

BTW, the 60 second exercise is called "Ditty" If you purchase the book, you`ll see the whole score. Not only will that help your hands, but your ears as well. Advancing your skills involves not just chopping out, but understanding your part as part of the entire line.

Some practice tips: practice everything you get in two ways
1) As slowly as you can stand it (maybe 1/2 of the original tempo); focus on control of your sticks, no excess motion after the stick hits the head

2) Go for raw speed, even if you hear things get dirty. What this does is build endurance and serves as a benchmark of how well you`ve mastered the piece. Any spot that`s dirty, go back and work just that section using method #1

Always, Always, Always use a metronome!!!

hey charlie...a cool easy begginner trick is while your doin sum paradiddles or ne kewl rudament jus turn over your left stick and slap it half way off the right side of the snare and then with your right stick hit the half thats off in the air and catch back into traditional...might seem confusing but if youve ever seen blast youll kno wat im talkn bout

Just starting out? Start with the book that all good drummers swear by: Stick Control by George L. Stone. His method is not about rudiments per se, but about training your hands to be able to move exactly as the music specifies. In learning the exercises, your reading skills will develop as well. He also makes a point of running exercises at soft volumes (p, pp, ppp) as well as louder dyanmic levels (f, ff, and fff)

Second, get a metronome and a decent practice pad - I use a RealFeel practice pad and a drum machine for a metronome. Since you have a PC, I can email you some midi files that are nothing more than metronome tracks. I can also record these to mp3 format and add marching percussion with and without the snare drum parts.

Lastly, get with a good instructor, preferably one who has played/taught in the style you want to get into, be it rock, jazz, marching, etc.

Hope this helps,
TJ

Drumset vs. Snare    21:34 on Thursday, December 15, 2005

Ha snare drums are easy. And drumset is harder. But they can`t really be compared. The skills are different but can be applied to both, yeah? Snares got it easy and its all about the glory. Try playing on the best highschool bassline in tx. Paradiddles in a month? Try... Cheese, FUBAR, Chuggadah, flam fives... Or the fourth partial of 32nd notes at 188...

Dont invest any time in Drumline the movie. What a joke. Check out the Rudimental Cookbook. It will help you out a lot with exercises and marching snare solos.

Woever was talking about rudiments, listen. My drumline can outdrum the one from that stupid movie and everyone marching can play any of that after a day. Buy the rudimental cookbook if you`re looking to advance your skills.

Like the guy said earlier it helps a lot to put the movie in slow motion while watching it. But the drumline beats sound good but are really pretty simple, just a good few hours of concentration and you should have everything down. Member a lot of it is eye candy and rudiments are much more important if u wanna get on a good line.
