Just play. Make your own stuff. Have fun. Search for music on-line. The move will not help you. Its a dance team with sticks. Thats all that drum line is. Go to drum corps web site and look at there video. That is the stuff you should look at. Snare tricks are just away a drum line intertains the crowd when the horns are playing.

i dont want to break the news to everyone but the reason jeff queen is the best is because he learned the proper way to play the snare. there was no "drumline" movie for him. reading music, rudiments and proper technique is what he mastered to get good. ILL TELL YOU THE TRUTH, WATCHING SOMEONE PLAY HARD HYBRID RUDIMENTS IS WAY MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN WATCHING A STICK FLIP!!!!. if all you want to learn is doing cool stuff with you sticks, try doing some club juggling or something like that.

itll be better for you

Also, i just read most of the posts, ya drumline moovie was really chessy and when i began to read that ppl were impressed by it, i began to laugh. No really, check out DCI, i went to see it this weekend for the 4th time, i went to the show in pittsburge and the canton show i went up to also was rained out. Anyways, the dci shows are cheap, and checking out the corps warming up in the parking lot is a really awesome experence, and is where i spend most of my time. Fav libe this year soo far is vanguard (soo far this year I saw, bluecoats, crossmen, bosten (pretty tight show this year), cadets, few others)

Yep, later guys

To those who profess to want to "Play what you hear in your head" and do all the stuff they saw in the movies: Did anyone notice that those playing for Morris Brown did less tricks and more playing ? Did you also notice that they sounded considerably cleaner than A&T? Morris Brown is a real college, as is Clark Atlanta, but both are Marching Bands, not Drum Corps! The accent pattern in MBC`s second cadence is a 6/8 clave. SC Vanguard snare knows what I mean...

Back to the point of playing what you hear in your head...Given a musical context, this is known as improvisation. The key to it is practice! I think it`s great that many of you have these ideas in your heads, but if your hands aren`t trained, then what`s the end result? Here`s a hint: roll a drum down some stairs, it`ll sound much the same when you listen back to it.

Backsticking is really easy if you start out slow and then move on to get faster. Think of it like this: Hard, soft, soft, Hard, soft, soft.
On the hard note, hit the large end of the stick.

Ok, I`ve been playing the drums for like 3 years. I have my rudiments down And I am the first chair drummer in my grade level. I played the quads (Im going to a parade in 45 minutes =p) And the best trick I learned for the quads is to look confident, I mean, I can do flips and stuff, but in parades, unless the whole drumline is doing it, it shouldn`t be done.

I practice rudiments all the time. I have a teacher, he was center snare for the BlueCoats I believe. Right now we`re doing concert music, but I`m still working on snare. Next year I`ll be a fish and there are two spots opening up on snare. I want to be the first female on snare line, but there are 3 guys that didn`t make it last year who are very, very good. I don`t think about tricks, you`ve got to be able to play the song without it looking like a circus.

Hey Everyone,

Yeah Im gonna go with SCV snare guy here. You HAVE to learn technique and rudiments before ANYTHING else. Ive played in almost every type of ensemble imaginable, and I know from experience you have to know the basics before anything. I also would like to say I hated drumline the movie, it was terrible. If I wanted to learn the junk they played it would take 10 minutes, because its basic. So if you want to email me go for it, I`ll help in any way I can. I`ve been playing for 9 years, 5 marching, 3 on tenors, 2 on bass, and snare on the side the whole time . Have a good one.
