Tricks are supposed to add a visual to what`s being played. If the playing aint there, the visual, no matter how slick it is, is gonna` make you look like a poser.
If you want the best of both worlds, check out the Blast! DVD Look for a scene called "Battery Battle" The two solo snare drummers are former DCI I&E champs. Ask yourself this: Would the solos be less interesting without the visual. NOPE! Are the tricks so frequent as to hide the playing - NOPE!

about this whole tricks vs. real playing stuff.....ive been drumming for 5 years, both set and line, and this is my first year in the corps. i agree with everyone who said that the rudiments a must come first. the drums are a musical instrument, so the musical ability must come first. HOWEVER....when a high school band is playing on the field during halftime, it is a SHOW. thats why they call it the HALFTIME SHOW. the audience isnt going to know that you just did 12 alternating hertas at 180 bpm......they`re going to know that you just flipped your stick around and it looked cool as hell. once again id like to stress tricks dont mean musical ability and the drums are all about music (obviosly)

the players in the movie drumline were not that good. if you look at the part when they do the check and roll patterns you may notice how dirty they are. im not sure how many lines use the tearm dirty so ill tell you what it means; not together. dont try to do what you see on drumline the movie, practice eights and accents, also known as bucks, practice them at different hights and speeds. the only way to build relly good chops is to start slow and work on your techniqe. slowly go faster while keeping you form. you will work up your chops up if you put the time into it. Jeff Queen is someone to look up, try to copy his form. if you have any questions or if you would like me to prove to you that what ive said is true im me. my aol sn is alphaqup2much

i think rudiments and stick tricks equally r important to impress pple. listen if u want to impress some1 who has no clue how to drum or even not no what a paradiddle is u add the tricks cuz they wanna see some action. if your tryin out for somethin u wanna no your rudiments and maybe add in a few tricks here and there

battle? this is not the movie DRUMLINE buddy! i dont know anyone who battles on snare or tenors. what are you planning on playing in a battle? thats hella funny
there was one good quote from the movie drumline "if you dont have the PATIENCE to LEARN your craft you shouldnt have the chance to play here" or something like that.

The snare drum isnt something you should take up in your spare time. Like almost everybody said ive seen drumline, you have to look past that movie. I`m 14 and I know all of the songs and cadences. Drumline is just a movie its fake. It was nice and all but you have to star lookin at real music.thats all i have to say. If anybody needs some tips on tricks and backsticking just e-mail me aight.
