[color=blue]I waz @ the filming of DRUMLINE and the movie in my opinion waz good, but the movie is very one sided.
This movie waz mainly all about HBCU`z(Historically Black College or University)Marhcing bandz, FOX had 2 keep tha audience intrest in mind. Basically DCI drumlines may be more into rudiments and percision but who wantz to watch a movie about that? it iz very boring as compared 2 a traditional marching style where they try 2 put more entertainment with music. To me it waz tha best way show that marching bandz are more than just a bunch of nerdz playing on a feild.

once again this sumthen u might only find in tradtional style marching bandz. Percussion battles are mostly used 2 impress the crowd that u are performing for it`z mainly about entertainment and somewhat rudimentz.

I don`t know about DCI lines in colleges, but do u guyz haze? most HBCU Drumlines or the band period, have 2 cross with their each idividual section better know has crab hazing.

ya... i guess the movie was alright for an audience... but i just dont want people thinking they know everything about drums by just watching that movie. yea its a great ispiration for playing but when u have kids saying "all u gotta do is put it in slo mo" then u have a problem. theres more out there than drumline the movie. especially when u have kids trying to join the drumline at ur school just because they saw the movie. and they arent dedicated to the practices and learning the movie. they just wanna impress. drumline might not be the best movie to watch to learn tricks and stuff, but it still is something. isnt it better to know lots of things and know a variety then know one set of drills?

I`ve been playing snare drum for 5 years, and what most people said are right. It`s the rudiments and rolls and how u play is what gets u in drumline. Stick tricks is something me and my friends do for fun and show. but u asked for a stick trick. Start in traditional. hit the left stick with ur right repeatedly so the left stick goes up and down rapidly. Tuck in your thumb under the stick so it goes on the wrist. Keeping on hitting the stick so it still hits the snare drum in fast 18th notes. Practice this until u got it. Then start walking around the snare drum.

Another way of describing that rhythm: 16th notes on the rim, snare on 2, 4, ah of 4 in 1st measure, snare on 2 and 4e+a in 2nd measure.

I know every young guy (teenager) wants to play some cool stuff like the fictional A&T in Drumline. Here`s a thought: by learning rudiments and reading, that stuff will seem like childs play!

Go to Vic Firths rudiments website at http://www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.html and listen to some of the Flam/Drag rudiments or the Quadrant D exercises at the bottom. Also check out the DCI I&E solos at drumhard.com http://www.drumhard.com/pages/media.asp

I hate to say it, but those vocalization methods rely on the old "1-e-and-ah 2-e-and-ah..." counting in order to make sense.

However, by counting out loud while practicing (with a metronome), it will help strengthen your sense of time and meter.

It will also enable you to "count in your head" and lock into the rest of the line. For drumset, with your hands and feet doing different things, this will prove indispensable!

Almost like a chant.
