Yeah I just watch it and sit in front of it with my pad and sticks and just practice. I can already play like 2 or 3 beats in there. Also, don`t depend on that movie because most or all of that stuff is fake. I`m in marching band and it`s a lot different than that. To practice I just recently got sheet music off the internet and printed it out. That will help.

listen, the older more experienced guys are right, you must build up your chops and learn your rudiments, thats what my drum instructor said, if you really want to play, you`ll do anything for it, and that was 5 months ago, and i made snare my freshmen year, its not tough if you put time and effort into it and work hard, its not all about stick flips, those are cool once youve mastered the basics, and dont ever doubt that you cant play something, with enough practice you can, so just keep working at it

For those who think Drumline is the end all to be all, I invite you to watch a DCI show (Cavaliers, Cadets, Blue Devils, Santa Clara, who took High Drums for 2004)
Nevermind the tricks for now...If you can`t play rudiments clean, do you think you`ll do tricks clean? Probably not!
Traditional grip is NOT a form of stick control - it is done to honor the military origin of marching percussion. Way back when, before carriers, all snare drums were worn on slings. The simplest way to play them was to place the stick between the middle and ring fingers. Hence the name "traditional" grip. For those that march tenors, quads, bass, etc. your grip should be somewhere between a French and German grip (Matched)
Anyway, let`s get back to basics: Sloppy rudiments and technique gurantees sloppy sticking - especially for tricks!
Has anyone ever seen the Battery Battle from Blast?

Hey man, that movie was crap. All the stuff you saw in there was easy and sloppy. If you want to learn some visuals try getting the video tape of John Wooten playing Africa Hot. That solo should get you started.

i actually try to stay from tricks, they dont really help your playing, but if youre human (like most of us are) youre gonna naturally wanna sho off
im me some itme, mine is drummerdude555
ive been playing snare for 3 years now, scottish snare, which is a bit obscure, but its got harder music than drum corps
the professionals in scottish snare are impossibly insane
u think drumline s good?
watch these guys
also, check out www.euspba.org
look around for the massed band beatings
if you can play them, youre a decent drummer
thats all for now, peace-

To me..
the Drumline crap is very easy...
just watch the slomo once and u should get it...
maybe not with the sticking but learn the beat
then add the sticking
also just ask your band director if he has any solos you can work on to get better..

Traditional marching band shows did not consist of drumline battles. WTF are you thinking. Look back to 70s DCI such as Bridgeman. Military style marching was prominent not drumline battles.
Im tired of people asking me to drop a beat. Yea im black but i hate the movie drumline. It makes me sick. Im auditioning for SOuthwind, playing skills are more important than visuals (the proper name for "tricks").Ah I love DCI

Reversing the "reverse" traditional grip

I am presuming you`re left-handed? Doesn`t matter, actually. I had a kid in the drumline I taught that was left handed and started playing the same way you did. What I had him do was play everything with a matched grip and lead with the right hand. What this will do is help the muscles in your right hand unlearn that grip a bit. You don`t want to completely forget that grip though: the dexterity you`ve developed to this point can come in handy when backsticking.
Start with the basics: a good stroke with a controlled rebound.

I cant seem to get a good rebound with my left when playing the traditional way, because I am right handed.
