Everyone knows traditional is w/ the right hand! If your band teacher is making you du left, there wrong. Also, it just takes practice.

well, it depends on what style u are playing. See, i play scottish and corps styles, bc in scottish style snaring, ur left hand only uses the thumb, not the index or middle. but corps uses alot of forearm and stuff. i personally use a combination. but i think its swiss/dutch snare drumming, that uses the reverse traditional.... hope tht helped

with a marching band grip, you want to start out with the stick between your middle and ring finger
it should look like your flipping someone off
now bring the butt of the stick down between your thumb and pointer finger
now wrap your middle and pointer fingers over the stick and touch your thumb with your middle finger
it will feel extremely weird at first
id suggest practicing doubles in this position until youre comfortable with it
at that point, go all out
itll take a few weeks to a month to get used to
but once you get it down, youll never regret it
dont freak out if you start holding pencils or forks or such in a traditional grip
it very natural
so just have fun, dont push too hard
youll wear yourself out, and itll get real painful real fast, and that takes the fun out
so have fun, picking up snare was the best thing ive done in my 14 years on this planet
peace-

Tradtitional grip is always with your left hand. make sure that you hold it tight in your fulcrum (where stick rests between your pointer finger and thumb) and keep your pointer finger tight around the stick. The middle finger should rest on top of the stick next to your pointer finger. Your ring finger should be under the stick right after your nail ends but before you first knuckle, on the skin. Your pinky will rest on your ring finger. Remember that only your pointer finger and your thumb are really what plays. You should be able to take off all of you other fingers and still be able to keep the same height. The rest of the fingers are used for support. Hope that helps!

As far as hands go, if you`re left handed, your right hand is the one that is all weird. and for the majority, left hand is all odd lookin` The tradition originated with the crroked snares, it malde them easier to play.

Hey you guys...I dont know where you get this stuff about traditional grip in the right hand...either you have really really bad teachers....or you should get a teacher...because no one, plays traditional in the right hand...the way a strap is made (a strap being what held the snare that the old British Drum Corps use(d)) angles the drum to the right, therefore you angle your left hand to have a better stroke. dont ever ever ever play traditional in your right hand

Oh my gosh dude...traditional with your RIGHT hand??? you are officially retarted...anyway, a good way to get traditional grip playing better is: (1)play your rudiments slowly. (2)play them on a pillow!!! then go to a drum or pad (3)DONT try to play all your FLAM DRAGS,EGG BEATERS,PATA FLA FLA`S, FLAM-A-DIDDLES ETC. with traditional just yet...work with easier rudiments first, and just practice dude i dunno what your previous director was thinking...just buckle down and GIT ER DONE
