I am a freshman and I play snare drum in a drumline with only 1 other snare drummer, and the section leader always, ALWAYS, blames everything on me. Even if its the other drummer, i know he wants me to be good, but hes a real jerk, any tips?

Talk to the section leader and tell him about how you feel about the whole "blaming everything on you" situation. Tell him or her that if they really want u to get better then they should let u instead of closing in on you all of the time and making u feel like a bad musician.

Looks like you have self-realization issues. You honestly believe that you are better than him and everything that goes wrong is someone else's fault. It couldn't be you!

You need to back up and look at the possibility that everyone else isn't wrong - IT'S YOU!!!

Man I really dislike this attitude.

Also, how quick you all are to call the section leader names and disparage his character when you weren't even there! You don't know how off this guy was when he ratt-uh-tatt tatted on his silly little drum.

Oh my god thankyou so much Phil. Link, your a freshman, the possibilty of you dirtying a musical phrase is highly likely. Relax though, its not like you've been playing for 3 years, just take the criticism and try to line up with your center snare, even if he is wrong. Our drumline motto is if everyone is dressing or lining up with the person who is wrong and you don't, that makes you wrong.

I didn't mean that. I'm just asking that you give them more credit because I'm assuming they've been playing long that you have.

Ha! That was a good one. I bet all the guys at the home for slow children got a kick out of that doosey.

Obviously freshman don't know what they are doing. They THINK that they know everything but they have no idea. Follow your leader and be the best follower a guy can be. THAT is what will make you a great leader someday.

Think about it, smackjobs...

Phil, you sound like you are right on some points, but when fight fire with fire with your "witty" comebacks, these guys will NEVER see your point of view. Keep in mind that YOU haven't seen this section leader either, so you have to assume that what you're hearing is the truth. A 13 or 14 year-old freshman is still old enough to know they are being unfairly singled out. And freshman, you should go to your band director. Also, do your best to get even BETTER and ask the other snare to point out anything you're messing up on. Hope your sophomore year is better.

to all the arguers arguing about nothing... calm down.

to the original poster:

He's doing that because your the freshman and the scapegoat.Stop letting him, call him out in front of everybody when he does that. especially if you have a drum instructor or someone who's watching. But MAKE SURE you aren't messing up, or it'll be your ass.
Just be sure to do it in a way that wont give any openings for ridicule on your part.
OR
Suck it up. It happens to the freshman. just look forward to the day you can do the some four years from now
