it all depends on what you are using for. bigger is louder but small can be loud with the right mallets

If I could afford to have multiple sets, I would have 10 12 and 14 toms for stage performance, and 12 13 and 16 toms for recording and home practice use. But if you can only choose one, it depends on the style of music you play.
Jazz-small toms
Rock-large toms
Fusion-small toms
Country-either
Also it depends on your personal playing style and what you like, if you have your mind set on playing a small tom setup, for all types of music, then don`t let anyone change your mind, it is up to you. Good Luck.

Hey im hoping to get a pearl SMX soon with mount toms at sizes 10"x8" 12"x9" and 14"x11" however i also want to at some time put an extra high tom up preferably at 8"x8". Does anyone know if pearl makes a 8"x8" for the SMX series?
