This is a big thing to me. I even made a web site about it http://hometown.aol.com/cronos123456789
There is this kid at my school that has been playing for about a year, and sucks. He is one of the worst drummers I have ever heard and he thinks he is better then everybody and thinks that he is a percussionist.

OH seriously tho there is a guy who was in my band class like that (thank god i am a partial section leader) i dont let him touch the drums!!! mwahahaha. the real diff is that a percussionist plays a range of percussion equip.not "just" drums. percussionists rock and so do drummers.

sup tuba dude

look, I don`t think I`m the best out there, but I do know that I play percussion, and I`m good at what I do. Although I refer to myself more as a drummer more than a percussionist(mostly because it sounds cooler), I think that people who just play set are wasting their time. While this isn`t true of all drummers, most of these guys just play really loud simple beat with their crappy friends on guitar and they think they`re hecka cool. I`ve been playing percussion for 4 years, I`m 14, and I don`t own a drumset, yet I`m the best at my school on any percussion instrument except xylophone and bells and such. I do think that just drummers who have no concept of what musical ability is or how to play together as a band can`t call themselves musicians. I`m tired of these stupid punk drummers thinking that they`re good because they can play loud, and I suck because I know the the word "dynamics" means.

newayz, much love, peace, and adobo grease

I always thought that it was just my school, but it sounds more like every school is plauged with "drummers" who only like punk. I think that a big part of the difference is the motovation involved. The "drummers" don`t have tallent and only want to play what they hear on the radio. The real percussionests may or may not have a whole lot of tallent, but they are more motovated and focus on much MUCH more than the simple punk stuff. I know of two "drummers" at my school, one of which is terrible and does only punk. The other of which apears to have just as much tallent, but actually does jazz and classical percussion and listens to different styles: he is quite motovated.

yo whats goin on? alright. drummers just hit things...and are really bad. percussionists hit things but are good at it. and dont brag that they are the best. they prove it by playing... not just talking. notice how chicks dont sit and say they are always the best...hmmm... maybe there is a point there! lol. lataz y`all! ~jae~

i hate all these punk drummers who think they play the coolest stuff with thier easy so easy fast beat bass snare bass bass snare thingy they do it just by it self with no fills or anything except maybe a little hi hat in there somewhere but thats it the first time i got on a drumset i could play that like any punk drummer and i was at guitar center playin a cheap ass set i think the only good drummers in rock are metal drummers they actually play complex stuff i also like jazz drums its hella harder playin traditional style ive tried a lot harder than matched style but newayz metal drummers are so much better than punk drummers

This has to be the stupidest thread on the whole internet. Way to dis your fellow musicians, rather than the jocks that undoubtedly dump you in the trashcan in between classes. There is nothing wrong with playing punk rock. It is a perfectly viable, legit form of music with HUGE commercial success and broad appeal. Guess who started in punk and can`t read a note of music? DAVE GROHL, among many others. If you don`t know who that is google him, and climb out from under that rock you are living under. Punk also offers the chance to begin writing simple songs at a young age. How many concertos have you composed? Yeah, well, your friends in the punk band probably have 8 to 10 songs they wrote themselves. By the way, sit down at a drum kit and play the simple, fast punk beat for half an hour. Play it hard. I bet you $100 you can`t. Have fun on your triangles and claves.

really now. well i love punk music the foo fighters are awesome and i love Blink but really drumming isnt a talent. thats like saying drawing is a talent. aqny idiot can very well pick up a pencil and draw a stick figure. Just like any idiot can pick up a drumstick and start hitting a drum. the art lies in knowing as much as possible on what you do and then doing it well. drumming is like scribbling where as percussing is creating a masterpiece if you know how. just like a painter needs to know what paint to use on what paper and what colors mix to make what a percussionist needs to know what notes and instruments are needed to make the song sound good. so you may go ahead with your crayons and scribble along but the percussionists can keep on with your works of art!!

heather, i didn`t understand that at all...i honestly don`t get your point, not to be rude. Are all drummers the equivalent of small children with crayons, doing only crude drawings, while percussionists are fine artists using oil paint on canvas? Because most percussionists i`ve met are reading and playing music that was not written by them, which to me is a bit like painting by numbers, or completing a coloring book...hmmm.

but how do you expect them to write good music when drummers dont thouroughly understand music. its possible but not probable. like being a singer and not knowing anything about reading music or vocal rangesthey rarely come out with anything good <britney spears> unless its copied from somthing they are already familiar with. my point is how can you be really good at something and not know anything about it?

good point though it is like a coloring book with all the rules and such thats why drumming is more appealing than percussing.
