WOW, do you guys even KNOW what you are arguing about now? It sounds like you all are just wanting something to argue about. DRUMMING is banging on things in a certian order with a certain beat, PERCUSSION is banging on other things in a certain order with a certian beat... beating pace and how hard you beat makes a difference too. But you know what? THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME THING, just people categorize them differently. SO... it`s just an OPINION you guys are arguing about... this could last forever. Everyone quit acting so full of yourselves... quit gossiping... and GIVE UP ON THIS DUMB CONVERSATION!!! You are pretty much just trying to make yourself feel better by putting other people down. Who cares? Maybe when people ARE bad, they don`t care. They have fun with it.. let anger out with it or something. Let them do it. It`s not THAT big of a deal. Either way you are beating on something, making a noise. If you want to get technical about it- who is the real musician... a flutist or a clarinetist? Guitarist or pianist? ANY of them, if you get down to it, is just making SOUNDS. You put them in an order, you give it a name, you learn to play it, then you are considered "a musician". Oh my GOSH, get over it. Nothing is actually perfect if ya think about it!!! If you REALLY want to get going on this conversation, be ready for it to go farther. SOOOO.... yeah, just stop arguing about it. It`s dumb wasting your time on here arguing about which is the real musician... a drummer or percussionist. Here`s a thought: make yourself sound REALLY good, say "Oh yeah... I am a percussionist and a drummer..." There- now you all sound good, after all you are just beating on things. SO you`re all equal now. Congrats.

i do agree theat it is like saying "who is the musician pianists or guitar players, but if you were to classify drummers and percusinists, i would have to say percusinists can read music for all of the percusin instruments. I myself play trombone bass and drums, yet I would only consider myself a drummer, due to my lack of drum music reading ability

First off, most of your opinions are very ignorant, arbitrary comments that don`t even relate to the original subject; difference between percussionist and drummer. You have brought up an additional subject of whether the whole group of drummers and percussionists alike do not belong to a superior elechon of musicians, as well as claiming them not to be musicians at all. I would have to agree that several drummers are not to any extent musicians, and their skill level is close to nothing. Although, many drummers and percussionists have thorough understanding of melodic notation, and have grasped spiritual and intellectual understanding of a melodic instrument, therefore being able to express their mood and understand the underlying depth of the music. Some also compose music.
Now by definition, a drummer is simply one who drums-meaning they may or may not know how to properly play them. Percussionists are musicians who play percussion instruments. Well I will clear up one very obvious fact for you. Drums are considered percussion instruments. I would say by definition, drummers and percussionists are quite obviously of the same category. This is itself makes all of the above opinions false, and many opinions were made with no knowledge of the craft of drumming.
I believe musicians that play percussion instruments are just as much musicians as any other, and deserve the same respect.
Now as I previously stated, many of the opinions formed were arrogant, simple minded, and ignorant, and bear nothing of importance; this does not mean you are entitled to these opinions. It means me, as well with other intelligent people who think things through would like for people to not make opinions pulled out of the air, many times out of anger, or seeking domination over people as a pithy attempt to make yourself more than you are for whatever the reason.
I ask that you not insult me, or try to argue further, as I have proved my point. Even though this statement is quite pointless, I wanted to make it. Why is it pointless? Many of you are quite stupid and arrogant enough to do so, even after I have asked not to...
Well these are my thoughts on this subject. E-mail me to know more about drumming. Besides...instructing the ignorant is a work of mercy!!! Hahahahaha.
I am 13 years old. I am proud to be a musician of percussion.

Excuse me miss/mister know it all, (no insult intended, Robby is a unisex name) before you come enforcing the "superior knowledge" that you seem to possess there a few things you should realize:
1. We`re not in some forum dictatorship where the forum god makes us stick to one topic, we are allowed to shift topics
2. Your own argument did not stick to the original topic when you included arguments about musicians and even composition, so don`t criticize others for doing so.
3. You said that others` opinions were false. What? How can an opinion be false? Ex. "I think I need a haircut." "No, you`re wrong." Opinions are not statements of fact, they are statements based on likes and dislikes and maybe some knowledge of fact (but not always) and they can differ from person to person, so don`t claim opinions are false.
4. Nothing makes your opinion better than another person`s, and nothing makes your opinion "correct".
5. When you call yourself an intellectual, you lose all modesty, and you lose all respect from others.
6. Don`t ask people not to make fun of you if you`ve just been a complete jerk to them.
7. Dont`t call people stupid and arrogant for making fun of you in a pathetic attempt to not have them do so. It`s going to happen, deal with it.
8. Most percussionists, musicians, drummers, and whatever else get along pretty well. They can easily start a conversation about anything drum related. They don`t try to use their "intelligence" to make others feel lower or inferior. You are obviously not yet part of that crowd.
So Robby Besch, as you can see I not made fun of you. I have poked holes in your argument and questioned your attitude. That must mean I`m not "stupid" or "arrogant", right? Obviously, you have an expansive vocabulary, which is impressive at 13, but you have nowhere near the developed social skills required to survive in the real world, and even high school. You have some growing up to do.

I to am annoyed by this problem.... I`m am the Percussion Section Leaderin my 8th grade school band, and my other drummers so-called "percussionists" don`t even know how to read read music. And yes you do need to know how to read music. You do if you want to play timpani or bells, and other melodic, percussive instrument.
Today, they getting jealous that I was playing timpani on every song. They demanded that they play... but I had to tune them for them. NO WAY!!! They just played in the wrong pitch all day.
Down in my school district it goes like this.
Beginner= dummer (yes that`s spelled correctly)
Better= drummer
You have the ability to play any percussion instrument= percussionist.
I apologize for my rambling.......
