Im in the pit. I love it to death. I dont believe that we worker harder than the band or the drumline. I just think that, yes, we can`t march. But I`d also like to see them try to play 6-3-2-1 (our warmup) and godly speeds for 15 minutes straight, and not cry from the pain in your arms. We get blisters, and burns from the heat of those damn cymbals. I`ve gotten hyperextended wrists, and more bruises than I could count on my arms and legs from lifting the heavy instruments on and off our carts.
I love pit though, I wouldn`t trade it for any section in the band. Yes, we goof off, yes we take many breaks, yes, we dont get a lot of work done. But thats not our fault! Our director can be a pushover... or maybe we just have learned how to get him off subject (one word: DCI...)
Our band is an amazing band. It seems to get a lot smaller, but the pit and drumline grows. About a 1/6 of the band is just percussion. My freshmen year we took home "best percussion" at our final competition. It might have been the fact that we had the flutes put down their flutes and play cymbals for the final song... but maybe just maybe... its what the drum director says... and that it was the pit. We had an AMAZING pit... and still kinda do. Our drummers... well, um, they`re slowing loosing skill... but they have some kicking parts this year. Im quite excited for this year and what will happen

it all depends on where your coming from, show style bands with pit, usually its no big deal. on the other hand, corps style bands and drum corps itself, you watch, theyre playin outrageous music, and running from instrument to instrument, they work just as hard as everybody else

Well, you all are basing you opinions prob on were ran in High school band (which suck). Watch DCI for the love of god or pull you heads out of your asses. When you get out of highschool you will relize that things change, and everyone doesnt want snare, or what you think everyone wants. Everyone has what they are good at, and each section has their own perks. soooo stfu n00bs

You guys need to grow up. Both pit and drumline are very important. Us as musicians are not drummers or Pit players, we are allpercussionists. If anyone feels the same please email me

Yeah i`m in Pit. I didn`t really want to be in PIT, but it isn`t really that bad. We have tons of fun because we do nothing!

okay, for Alan, just because whenever you were in pit at your high school and they didn`t do anything doesn`t mean that all pits are like that, maybe that just means your pit is lazy. I`m a freshman at my high school, I play quads and I am a girl, I was in pit last year and we didn`t slack off at all. We never talk except for in the given breaks that our directer gives us (very few) and we always help out with other sections and carrying other stuff up. So just because you know of one pit in one high school that didn`t do crap, you shouldn`t base your entire opinion of pit on yours. Thank you.

Tori

hey, i was in pit for a year, now im on line. the pit is sometihng tottaly diffrent from drumline, you have to understand that.yes they dont march, so you can call them lazy. but they have to hall around all that equitment, oh yeah and the pit is more musical than the battery. not butting down the drumline at all but, you can march a marimba and play a four mallet part om it can you. every section has its place in the band.

well i dont know about marching band , because i play tenor sax in that. but for indoor season . wow my freshmen year (last year) i was in pit and it is really freaking hard... it takes so much work to memorize the music. especially when it`s some crazy stuff. but now i play 2nd bass. and well i still wish i was in PIT because bass isent as much fun at all.. call us lazy , but i think we work pretty hard

I know that this started like 2 years ago, but o well i need my two cent here. The Pit is the non-marching part of the Drumline. Yes Pit IS the other part of the drumline. Also, I played clarinet in my freshmen year and then switched to pit in my 10th grade year. We are not lazy people, we work hard. Like some of you said, it depends on the way your school does pit. In general, we are not lazy. We work hard and carry heavy equipment around. Also, we can`t just look at the drum major and walk around. We have to look every once in a while and stay in the same area for each song. It`s tiring, and you definitely have to be athletic and skilled to be in pit. Anyone disagree? e-mail me @ ohsgrl05@aol.com so that we can talk about this

go to drumlineparkinglot.net and download some santa clara vanguard or another top div 1 drum corps. or better yet, look at some world class WGI pits like rcc, mcm, momentum, or bk. then tell me the front ensemble is a worthless/boring section.
