well first i just want to say...i`m in a very well known pit and not because i have too but because i want to... i was 3rd base for the drum corps, blue devils,my first year .I messed around on some pit stuff and grew an intrest in it .this is my 3rd year and now i`m the pit section leader. a band without a pit dosen`t have and effects .so i would keep your mouth shut about the pit .the pit practices just as much as the drumline in the hot blazing heat for 8 hours at a time .i wouldn`t call the lazy i would call it devoted.and pit takes more skill than drumline..i should know i`ve done them both.

I play timpani for my band for our whole show...the first time I touched one was this monday. learned it by busting my butt this past week, have almost all of our show memorized and such. Unfortunately I am the only hardworking member of our pit. I do think that pit has a greater tendency to be lazier, but also that the position can be just as hard or even harder than the battery percussion provided the members aren`t like the others in my pit.
Out of curiosity, does anyone here know some decent flips, spins, or anything doable with mallets? also maybe something from coming out of "set" position, something to spice up the show.

I don`t know what all this talk about pit being no fun and no work is all about. Our pit definently has tons of fun... All 30 of us. We might take breaks but what other section in the band doesn`t? If you are the one saying `pit was no fun and it didn`t take any work` than your pit must`ve not been that great because there is always something to work on...
Also, pit is PART of the drumline ... Snares, Tenors, and Bases are BATTERY pit is PIT those 2 sections combined = drumline.. Thanks.

Pit vs. Drumline

All I have to say is that I`m a senior and a drumline captain and have been in drumline since my freshman year. I`ve also never really had any respect for PIT and would feel condemned if I ever had to play with them. This year however they needed strong mallet players for the first movement so I agreed to play with PIT for the first movement ONLY, then I get on the field and march. PIT is the laziest bunch of tempo impaired, if you could call them so, musicians. And all they do is whine, complain and b**ch at eachother when they should be practicing. Now i`m not gonna knock everybody`s PIT because I know there are some out there that completlt kick a$$ and amaze the crap out of me, but majority are probably how I just described mine.

yeah i`m in pit..i`m section leader and you battery players have NO IDEA what kinda work we do why yall are learning drill...at my school we don`t get a break every 30 minutes like you guys do...we work our butts off and we have harder music than anyone else in the band...you sit through a pit practice and then let me hear what you say but until then back off because ya dont know what your talkin about!!!

Maybe you didn`t read what I wrote, but I did state at the end of my post that there are some Front Ensembles out there that are awesome and deserve such credit and work their butts off just like you guys do. However, mine doesn`t and I know that a lot of people out there would say the same thing about theirs, and I`m not going to draw conclusions that that`s how your PIT is either. Like I said before, I practice (if that`s what you would call it) with PIT while the band is running drill for the first movement cause I play with PIT during that song, so I know both sides of the story. I know how arrogant and cocky drumline is (view from PIT) and I also know how lazy and rhythm challenged PIT is (view from drumline). Don`t get angry with me, because as far as I`m concerned you can only see it one way since you are only in PIT. Next time you go outside with a 45 pound drum on, stand at attention and constantly run drill in the Florida heat with only one 5min break every hour then you tell me how it REALLY is.

I`m only in marching band because it`s a prerequisite for the jazz band. I play bass in the jazz band and since I don`t play any wind instrument but do play piano, I was put in the pit on marimba. Yes, my school`s pit doesn`t do much, but it`s just because we can`t do anything. Since we can`t do anything for field routines, we just sit around inside when everyone else is on the field, practicing.

hey i`m a freshman in pit and i wouldn`t be anywhere else! only over my dead rotting body would i quit....i played clairnt b4, it sucked major A$$...but that isn`t important....pit ROCX!!...well @ least our pit dose...yea, it seems like we do nothing, but it is only because we are oftin the most ignored part of the band because most directors only care about the battery cuz most directors suck a$$ anyway...ahem...as i was saying, if u got a problem with pit people, then u got a problem with me, oh and by the way pit has some mayorly kewl benefits like i get to play snare drum in pep band and i didn`t even need to try out :P haha....
