It all depends on what kind of line you have. At a lot of schools drumline tryouts are closed. Meaning that if you weren`t a percussionist at the last school you went to, a current one at the school you go to, or take private drum lessons you can`t try out. But if your school has open tryouts then I won`t discourage you from going out for it. The first thing you need to understand though is that being on drumline, 99% of the time, isn`t as glamourus as it looks. Yea, drummers are cool and everything, but it isn`t as easy as crashing a cymbal or beating on a drum. In marching band it`s all about technique and 9 times out of 10 those people on drumline have been busting their butts for the last couple of years to get where they are now. It`s not easy. Aside from that, if you can try out, do it. More than likely your cymbal players come out of your PIT so if that`s what you want to play you might not necessarily end up exactly where you want. When you try out they`ll put you where they think you`ll be most productive and that might not be your instrument of first choice, so just be prepared. Other than that all you can really do to get ready for tryouts is make sure you have good upper body strength (for cymbals your rms and shoulders are the most important), and can sight read rythyms and cymbal parts well. Have an upperclassmen of the percussion section help you learn how to read the music, cause it`s pretty different from what you`re used to. That`s all for me, if you`ve got anymore questions just send me an e-mail.

yes i just picked up the snare drum about 3 to 4 months ago..i thought it would be much easier
but then i broke my arm about 2 weeks into it...i was out for about 4 weeks...and before that i had almost everything down..i catch on fast lol
but the only thing i didnt have was the hardest and that is the ROLLS!! omg there hard but once i got my cast off my WRIST my wrist was all tense and it was hard to move it.. so i focused on getin it back in motion and now its about 2 months after i broke my wrist and im still workin on the rolls and i luv the drum...my drum teacher is awsome..and im workin on getin in drumline and i dont play in the skool i take private lessons, but heres the catch my drum teacher is in the high skool drumline so theres my ticket in getin in aditions.

but i hope everyone tries to play drums and if u dont get on drumline try getin in the band at the high skool and practice PRACTICE PRACTICE...and try out the next year...im 13 and im in 8th grade do u have any tips for me on my rolls and how i can get them faster WITHOUT GAY BUZZING lol
thanx to all who reads this!!

yo

if u want to get into the drumline for ur high school, especially on snare youve got to work on traditional grip. Im the second snare at Newport High School, one of the best drum lines in the northwest. rolling takes time and start off slow use a metronome with double stroke rolls. that should help out in the long run

I would make them learn a simple warm up and base it on how well they do it.
