I wouldn`t want either. They both live off of reputations earned long ago and do nothing to keep thast reputation today.
UNLESS you are going with a very expensive drum kit...the brand does not matter. If you can`t play them properly a DW or a Pork Pie kit will sound bad.
TAKE LESSONS and then go by a PREMIER or a PORK PIE

1) I`m not positive, but I think Pearl is Japanese also.
2) Sets: High end Yamaha, like the Maple Custom, are real sweet, but you got to care for them, they ain`t cheep either. I don`t care much for the Pearl sets.
3) Hardware: Yamaha 800 series is impossible to break. I`ve beat the crap out of the stuff and it holds up to anything
4) Marching: I think the Pearl marching stuff is much better than the Yamaha, especially the snares. Yamaha snares tend to break down too much, plus I don`t like the sound. I`ve taught lines using both, and I gotta go with the Pearl sound - much deeper and richer.
5) Keys: Yamaha is better, I think, but there are other brands that beat both.
So if 20 years of pro performance experience matters, there is my opinion.
BTW, I have a Yamaha Maple custom that I gig with, and a brand new Mapex set at home that I`m trying out, but my first set was a Pearl Export, and it did me fine for years. My 14 year old nephew has it now and it`s still holding up. I use a Yamaha J.R. Robinson 5-1/2" snare and Zildian (what else?)cymbals. I have Ross vibes and a Malletech Marmiba.

Pearl arent expensive if u go for a decent Second hand set. Which is what i have... i had a choice between A brand new set which costed about $600 (Yamaha) but u would have to buy more cymbols for it later which are absolutly crap.
and it costs about $600 for a set of cymbol them self. Or i could choose pearl which have the full set of cymbols which are really good and dont bend like the ones on the yamaha did. And it costed me only $800 for the lot. stole and drums sticks included, So as u can see pearl are way way better. Even though they are second hand they are still in great condition and well worth the price.

You should all be embarrassed buy your spelling, hopefully some of you are young enough to learn to spell better.
If I showed up for a gig and spelled as bad as you guys, I`d be fired no matter how well I played.

Pearl by a mile. These guys produce the best drumkits around. Just check out the Pearl export range. Cheap and absolutely unreal sound.

Ahh you little people, marching nether one they both can suck dynasty`s balls. And as far as sets go its all about two little letters "DW". But out of the two pearl sucks a little less.
