Wow, A lot of you like pearl better than Yamaha. Well that`s because you like what mom and dad got you. If you are paying for them yourself, then it`s because your trying to defend your decision to spend less money.

Go look at what Weckle or Erskine have been playing for the last decade of so.

Then go look at the freaks from the hair dressers convention that rep for pearl.

If you struggle counting to four, then perhaps pearl drums and some red paiste hi-hats can at least appeal to your rock star delusions. These drums sell well because they were marketed for the ENTRY LEVEL crowd. Those of us playing for 20+ years don`t even take them seriously.

Kid`s drums.

Go get some recording customs, you know, the ones you`ve been listening to for the last few decades on every second song played on Radio and TV. Then, after playing for a bit, go tap the pearls. Then put them up for sale, there are a lot of beginners out there that could use them for a bit till they learn how to play and if they don`t stick with it (pun intended) They won`t feel so bad about the cash they have tied up in the instrument.

Man, this is like saying which is better, a corvette or a Mclearn f1, and having a bunch of american rednecks start going on about muscle car power. point being they wouldn`t know what makes a car good because they have concentrated for too long on the wrong qualities. I`m seeing that here.

Sounds like pearl wins the majority vote here, but Im a beginner looking for a good starter set. Where should I look for a good price on Pearls, or anything good for that matter?

Personally, I`ve never tried a set drum for either one, but when it comes to marching, Pearl wins hands down. They have a much cleaner sound than the Yamahas, and yes, Yamaha toms sound like freaking tin cans.

the only reason the yamaha tenors sound like tin cans is because they arent being tuned right. also, yamaha sFz`s are what a lot of corps use, and i play yamaha snares. though for set i go with cb drums.

The percussion director at my school is the caption head for the Cavaliers, so naturally, I`m biased. My arguement though, is that regardless of price, Yamaha is the better drum. Yamaha is on the cutting edge of drumming technology - just look at the new MTS system they just put on the new snares. It`s pretty sweet.

Plus, the best of the best use Yamaha. Yamaha is THE sound in drumming - Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Akira Jimbo, Dave Weckl, Carter Beauford, and the world champion Cavaliers all know where the good stuff is.
