For the first time, I came across an exercise called sub divisions that had (5) 16th notes tied together. What is this called and how would you count it? How can you sub divide 5 strokes over a duration of one beat?

Well just like a triplet has to fit into one beat, so does a quintuplet. Act like you are conducting, bring your arm down in the tempo you are playing, that is one beat. Now do it while saying a quintuplet, use a word that has 5 syllables.

Hmm quintuplets just means having 5 evenly spaced strikes in one beat. So just start very slow and have a long beat and in every beat have five even beats, and just get it faster from there. You get the idea if you`ve done triplets too.
To do something like 32-notes you have to have the touch in your mind that it takes you to make fast 4 or 8 even strokes of beat patterns. Then it`s just do 3 times 8 strokeseries, you really can`t make that as a kind of word game anymore, you have to have the idea in your head that what is should sound like.
It`s easy because it`s even. Though the technique for playing that in a fast tempo might be quite tough.

1 e & a, 2 e & a, (op-por-tun-ity) 4 e & a
that must mean that the fivelet or quintuplet was on the...3rd count. try that one
