Hi,
I`ve just bought an old alto sax, and it plays beautifully, well almost. The G sounds strange, especially high G just above the stave. All other notes sound okay. I don`t know enough about saxes to know if that particular key needs repadding, but is this likely to be the reason, or could it be something else?

i think it probably is the padding. does it look worn? prehaps you should take it to a repair guy so they can check it for you.

Does it look worn? The pads look like they`re the original ones! They all look very old, but it still plays.
I`ve just found some Yamaha pads on Ebay, so maybe I`ll have a go myself.

Maybe it`s your embouchure? I used to have problems with my G above the staff because my muscles were too tight. Also, since it`s a old sax maybe you should take it down to the repair shop just to get it looked at. There may be something that you`re missing or maybe it just needs a re-tune.
It only costs about $10-15 to get it repaired anyways. I like to get mine looked at about every 4 months just for a re-tune and stuff like that.
