I`ve been playing the Bari sax for 5 years now, and now I mainly play Jazz. I use a Meyer 5 mouthpiece and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent jazz-cut reed. The only one I`ve seens so far is Brancher. Apparently Rico doesn`t make Select Jazz, and Vandoren doesn`t make Javas for it. I`m not very pleased with the Vandoren classic, which I use right now. In case someone would like to recommend a new mouthpiece, don`t bother, I can`t afford it. I would appreciate your opinions.

There is no way I could use a 4.5 reed. It`s much too stiff for the opening of the mouthpiece.
I use a 2.5 right now, and that`s about the right stiffness for me.

I just started bari sax this year after playing alto. Im a very quick learnerso its like ive been playing for 3 years. Anyways,I used a 1 read to start,NEVER use a 1...The high notes dont come out correctly, I then switched from 1 to 3 cuz its all they had, I was SO surprised at how much better I sounded,Ill be challenging some day and buy a couple 5s, I play my Bari EVERYday for about 3 hour. I am not sure why you think that there are no Rico Jazz Select reeds for bari sax, because there are. They are what I use for jazz band. They come in a variety of different strenghts, both filed and unfiled, so I am certain that you could find one that works for you. Look around, if your local music store does not carry them, then look online. Most places have them. They are great reeds.

Some of the best reeds I have used are fibracells. They take some getting used to, but they work really well!

im trying out some vandoren ZZ reeds once they ship, but try Rico Jazz Selects in a 2 1/2 - 3 (yes they do make them for bari) or basicly any reed in a soft size.
I played on 5`s for a while, now Im on 4`s and I can get a decent jazzy sound out of it. its all in the way you play it. I doubt I could describe it though, sorry

I use Vandoren ZZ on my alto. I totaly agree with the saying they have with them, "There is no JaZZ without ZZ" I love them! Here is a website where you can get them for bari at like half price. http://www.wwbw.com/Item/?itemno=105007
