pick whichever one you like to play more. They`re both equally suitable.

If you can play one sax well, you can easily play the rest well. The only difference between them is the key - most common saxes are in either Eb or Bb. So if you know all your major scales on one, you know all your major scales on the rest.
There are aspects about the alto and the tenor that are unique to each, and you just have to figure out which one suits you. The alto and the tenor are both equally suited to jazz and classical, it just depends on the player`s preference. You don`t have to just play one, either. If you learn to play all the common saxophones, and/or learn the clarinet or the flute, your marketability as a musician will skyrocket.
Cheers,
Thomas
