i`m 14 and been playing for 5 years. Started out on a 4C. Then last year got a a Selmer C Star and it`s sweet. Go with the C Star.

Selmer C*`s are strictly CLASSICAL pieces. They sound completely dead and sucky when you play jazz on them. Now, back to the question at hand... for that kind of music go order yourself a hard rubber Otto Link tone edge 6, 6*, 7 or 7* and a Consoli Ramplig DARK ligature(for alto sax- rubber). The link with the consoli produces a dark and cool but free sound; it`s hard to explain. Think Desmond in "Take Five". Almost. Hemke reeds work great for that kind of music.
Order them from wwbw.com

The otto link is a very sensitive mouthpiece, so it will probably take a while to get used to, especially with the consoli, but once you start getting the feel of the mpc and break it in a little, you`ll have a killer setup. By the way, what horn do you play on?

I`m sorry but you make absolutely no sense when you say you don`t want a "long" mouthpiece. The mouthpiece # has nothing to do with the actual size of the mouthpiece, and almost all mouthpieces are about the same length.

I already answered your mouthpiece patch question in a previous thread. You don`t really need a mouthpiece patch!!! Any good rubber mouthpiece isn`t going to get majorly scratched by your teeth. Without the patch, you can feel and control the vibrations of the mouthpiece more and sometimes, depending on the mpc, you have somewhat of a freer sound. The mouthpiece patches dampen the vibrations of the piece and give it somewhat of a deader sound. They`re really meant for plastic mouthpieces, and metal mouthpieces without a bite plate.

Kenny G uses a Dukoff D8, but they have a bright, cutting sound that wouldn`t suit what you`re playing at all.

Okay, mouthpiece sizes... every manufacturer has a different way of measuring, but here it goes. The numbers (or in selmer`s case, letters) correspond to the tip opening of the mouthpiece, which is the vertical distance between the tip of the mouthpiece and the reed. For jazz, most people use tip openings of six and higher (selmer e to g). Some other mouthpiece manufacturers use letters or numbers before or after the tip opening to indicate the style of chamber.

So for instance, a Bobby Dukoff M7 would have an M chamber and a tip opening of seven. Others like Otto Link come in a standard large chamber size and have variable tip openings between 4 and 9. Try visiting different mouthpiece manufacturers` websites to see how they measure their pieces.

geez dont get all mad, when i say i dont like long mouthpieces, i meant i dont like the distance from the tip of the mouthpiece to the hole (the other end) to be long, i`ve seen different mouthpieces because i play in a concert band, and i know how some are kind of flat and long while others are short and thicker comparitively

Why would you want a "short" mouthpiece over a "longer" one? What`s the difference?
